A Classic. Every Designer's Library Should Have This Book

Don't let the publication date throw you off. I've got the 1978 version, and it's still absolutely relevant. I've never found another book like it. Any designer creating magazine pages or multi-page publications will find core insights here. The book itself represents elegantly timeless information design. A great resource, great tool, great inspiration. Add this one to your collection.

A must have for anyone involved in producing books/magazines

With The Grid, Allen Hurlburt gives us a balanced introduction to the use of Grids in the layout of magazines, newspapers and books. Hurlburts presentation is a good, balanced and basic introduction to how grids are used in graphic design.

After a brief history of the use of grids, the book is divided into three sections. Each section deals with a specific form of print; newspapers, magazines and books. Hurlburt gives plenty of examples in each section of some of the best uses of the grid and details of the people who designed them and how they used them. We not only get plenty of examples from print but we get to see the underlying grid that was used to produce that print.

A wide variety of grids are outlined and the reader will be sure to find one grid system that works best for him/her. Despite the fact that the book was published in 1978 it retains its relevance especially given the increased popularity of desktop publishing software such as Adobe InDesign™. I found that the grids from this book worked perfectly in my design work with InDesign. There is a seven page technology appendix which is completely useless due to the age of the book, but this in no ways detracts from its value. Bottom line? If you are involved in producing magazines, books and/or newspapers, this book should be in your library.

Modular look

Despite having only ninety-six pages and using a grid that uses about three-quarters of each page (and not forgetting the text in a large point size) this can be a useful book for a designer new to publication grids. Hurlburt was a great Art Director who elevated the every two weeks Look magazine into a must-see for designers. His books always looked beautifully designed but I always thought they were rather lightweight in content -- like this grid book.

The contents look at the use of grids in newspapers, magazines and books but there really aren't too many examples shown and nowhere is there a page or spread from a publication with a grid laid on top to show exactly how the grid helps create the page design. On page fifty-eight there is a whole page illustration of a grid for the German magazine 'twen' which would be much more informative if it was laid over an actual 'twen' page showing how the headlines, columns of type and pictures conform to the grid. It's slightly annoying that most of the grids in the book are in sort of muddy mid-brown panels with black lines for the columns.

The lack of thoroughness in Hurlburt's book is really brought home if you look through Josef Muller-Brockmann's suburb book on the subject: Grid Systems in Graphic Design/Raster Systeme Fur Die Visuele Gestaltung (German and English Edition). Here you'll find page after page of detailed information about the subject: grid construction; type faces and sizes; the use of images. Consideration is also given to using grids with posters, all kinds of printed matter and exhibition design.

Hurlburts book is lovely to look at but there is no comparison with Grid systems by Muller-Brockmann. Also Hurlburt's book is far too expensive for what you'll get out of the contents.

BUYER BEWARE NOTE
I bought a paperback copy of this book recently but it was a print-on-demand inkjet copy which I thought was very poor because it's black only so that the mid-brown second color in the original hardback is reproduced as grey. The reproductions in the original were not that good to start with and made worse in the inkjet copy. I think it's worth looking around the net for the original hardback copies from Van Nostrand (1978) or the UK publisher Barrie & Jenkins (1979). My inkjet reproduction copy is of a Wiley paperback published in 1982.

William Bay is president of Mel Bay Publications, Inc. He is an accomplished guitarist and trumpet player and has performed on both instruments in a wide variety of professional settings. A challenge lies ahead!

This book represents the highest I've achieved in the Mel Bay Guitar Method Grade series. I have successfully played through W. Leavitt's Berklee 1 and half of 2. I really prefer the way Mel Bay lays things out in these books. However, there is very little writing regarding the exercise. I only gave it four stars because there is very little or no analysis indicating - how does this relate to playing the guitar generally? For example, you may very well be playing an 8th position C Chord in a song, but if I didn't play popular music or blues, I would never know it. So, a little more analysis would be good - as well as something in the book to say "Here is what you should get out of this book". What if you are not using a teacher - and you are just using the CD? There are no educational objectives other than your common sense and the table of contents.

However ,all things considered, these books are gems and I found this a welcome challenge.

To start with, I respect all of the Mel Bay music instruction books, and I have quite a few, from Grade 1 to (now) Grade 4, as well as the Mel Bay chord book and the "intro to" books on rock, blues, and jazz. Out of all the music books I have, the Mel Bay series are the ones I go to for definitive information about all aspects of reading music. M.B. covers everything they ever taught me in school band and choir, although a student would benefit from having someone to guide them and explain what the notation means - 1 sharp thru 4, 1 flat thru 4, (the "key", in other words) tempo, and terminology -sostenuto, pianissimo, dc al coda, etc. I haven't had a teacher for guitar, per se, but all the years of music in school are my foundation. Grade 4 is some deeper stuff to me, so it'll be a while getting through it, but it's a part of my journey, not a destination. As always, I appreciate the spiral binding and the CDs that make life easier, and Amazon makes finding the best prices a lot easier. So you just have to ask yourself if you want to understand musical notation or if you want to make do with tab or sounding stuff out. I choose Mel Bay.

yes, but the binding is terrible; i just bought the book and started reading; every page comes apart as you finish reading each page!
the publisher should take their publication seriously and care about customer's money!

Forgiveness not Bitterness

I just started to read this book today and find I cannot put it down. I had the honor of having Tracey perform my wedding vows and I know what an impact she has had on my wife and myself therefore impacting my marriage in a positive way. Tracey brings year of Pastoral Counseling experience to this book as well as the transparency of her own struggles. I have found in my work in Pastoral Counseling as well as Professional Counseling that many people are "stuck" because they have not had the tools to move past pain in their lives. This books adds practical tools and is based on sound biblical principles while incorporating elements found in professional counseling. This book can be a helpful tool for clients and counselors as well to assist those we minister to break free from things in the past and live the life God has intended for us!

I have had the pleasure of working on a pastoral team with Tracey Bickle over the past nine years. She is a tireless advocate for the hurting and the broken. Everyone has in some way been injured in life. Disappointment and injustice are common experiences we all must process and overcome. To do so, we need encouragement and hope. "Chaos Beneath the Shade" is an incredible tool. It's long enough (122 pgs) to be very thorough, but not overwhelming to digest. The thread of Tracey's personal story throughout the book, adds a depth of understanding and clarity that we all need to navigate our seasons of restoration.

The book is an excellent companion to the full text. It clearly summarizes the chapter content and provides tips to clarify the important concepts. The problems are relevant and the answers are explained in plain English. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is that the editing in this books is terrible. I have found numerous instances where answers were wrong because the numbers or text did not format the way they should have. For example, when showing the answer for a question in determining debits in credits, a number shows in the debit column instead of where it should be in the credit column. Easy to recognize, but you don't want to be figuring out that the book has wrong when you're trying to lean the material yourself.

Not as helpful as it should be...

This book explains the concept of the chapter but it also needs to be somewhat like a guide while doing homework. The first volume of the same book was very helpful, chapters 1 through 14. Volume 2, chapters 15 through 24, have not helped with homework at all. And to keep it just so that i could read about the concept it isn't worth it because textbook does it and also my professor. I had this book while going through few chapters but when I saw it has no use, I decided to return it and I am glad I did. I would not recommend this book for your intermediate class unless your professor does not explain the concept clearly then it might help little bit.

Geez just ask the Professor for the answer key!! Way over priced! Ya sure people have succeeded using this practice book...but if you really want to succeed as an Accountant, get an internship! For Pete's sake the wiley practice site is better.

About the Author
Gene Stratton-Porter (1863--1924) was born on a farm in Indiana. She later lived in a cabin adjoining the Limberlost Swamp, immortalized in her best-selling A Girl of the Limberlost. In 1923 she moved to California for her health, but was killed in an automobile accident in 1924. Other Stratton-Porter novels reissued by Indiana University Press include Freckles, Laddie, The Harvester, and The Keeper of the Bees.

A charming fable of American life in the 'teens

Because of my name, many have asked me over the years if I was familiar with Gene Stratton-Porter's book, "Michael O'Halloran". As a boy, I was given a copy containing the pen and ink drawings and stills from the "photoplay" and have treasured it since (I do not know if modern editions contain either set of illustrations). Re-reading it as an adult, I am still charmed by this tale of an orphaned newspaper seller who asks nothing of the world except to "be square". It is easy to overlook major holes in the plot (for example, we never do know what is wrong with Peaches other than she is sick and can't walk), when we are presented with such a vivid description of American life in 1914 - even if some of the city scenes don't quite ring true. Though the characters suffer many hardships, the overall tone is so upbeat that it's easy to see why this book outsold "Pollyanna" in 1916. Stratton-Porter's skill as a naturalist make the country scenes especially vibrant. Her ear for dialog is unsurpassed showing the reader that, if life in America wasn't like this, it should have been. Having read this book, I am ready to believe that children and adults did speak this nicely to each other once upon a time. You, too, will wonder if the world wouldn't be a lot better off if everyone could just "be square".

One of Gene's best stories!

I've read most of Ms.Stratton-Porter's books and this is one I've been wanting to read for months but wasn't available on Kindle until recently. She also wrote "Girl of the Limberlost". Most of her stories center on a nature setting as she was known as a botanist of sorts in her day and used her knowledge of that to write stories. This book is about a 10 yr. old boy making it on his own by following closely by his mother's instructions : stay away from booze, no stealing, giving an honest day's work for pay, keeping clean and saying his prayers. He does well for himself managing to steer clear of the dreaded orphanage home and being an industrious news boy. His good nature draws people to want to help him and he in turn has a courageous heart and rescues a small girl left to herself after her grandmother dies. All's well that ends well. This book doesn't have a hint of racial bias in it as other GSP books have. It's a wonderful book for children to read.

Mature ideas on true civility.

Peck's ideas are mature and insightful on civilized and organizational life. He takes the reader into all aspects of organized life including marriage, family, vocation and business. One just needs to turn on the TV and watch a talk show or the news to see the incivility that is rampant in our society today. Peck begins his book by stating that, "Something is wrong...." I agree with his assessment and greatly appreciate his attempts to call us forward toward maturity and curing ourselves. True civility can belong to us. But the responsibilty is ours!

Life changing

Scott Peck researched all of his topics in great detail the way in which he writes this wonderful book. His philosophies are very well expalined in great detail and maybe sometimes with too much detail, but he speaks with very easy to understand words. He not only emphasises on views that are correct to him but he puts forward other philosophers views and ideas, which allow the reader to comprehend and understand views that were not thought possible. It is book that will allow a person to grow mentally and emotionally as they progress through it. I also beleive that it is a life long guide that can help you with many obstacles along the way. It is a wonderful book that really teaches us the paths of human growth.

What civility really means

Peck starts his book with an example followed by a question: a man on an airplane, after talking to a fellow passenger, sees him as a business prospect, excuses himself, checks the man's credit rating, then returns with a drink "for his new best friend." Why, Peck asks, is this wrong? We know something is off the mark here, but can't quite put our finger on it. What isn't right, Peck explains, is that the passenger is really being treated as a "thing" to be exploited, but outwardly is being treated as an intimate friend. The theologian and philosopher Martin Buber, who has greatly influenced Peck, called the first relationship an "I-It" and the second, an "I-Thou." The first is narcissistic, the second, anti-narcissistic. And narcissism, writes Peck throughout this book, is really the problem: people treating others as if they are only "things" there to serve them. That, is a sentence, is the essence of incivility. Being civil doesn't necessarily mean being polite. The man on the airplane was polite, but a hypocrite. Civility means, more than anything else, not being so utterly self-centered that peoples' feelings are never considered. It can at times require forcefulness, even anger, to get the other person to understand. But true incivility, Peck believes, actually is a cause of quite a few divorces, and many problems in business. For those interested in the subject, this book is exceptionally interesting.
