Practical, cuts the sophisticated academics.

This is a very practical book, I teach the course on intercultural negotiations, and believe me this book covers most of the important material in this matter. It cuts the long and boring academic parts that students at the MBA don't like, and goes directly to "hands on the action", the practical and usefull issues.

Not the dream book for this topic, but the best that is avaliable.

Good book on culture difference

in negotiations. I use this book for a college course. Five negotiation styles: Dogder, Dreamer, Haggler, Competitor and Problem Solver, are interesting exercises. Chapter 12 provided the contrast on the negotiation style of Chinese, European, Middle Eastern and Latin American.

Most of the other chapters are not globally related. It is the same theory as other negotiation books.

Interesting strategy - Excellent defense examples

This is a short book but the author has interesting things to say.
The system is about selling OTM put + call options on individual stocks, ETFs or indices.
What's very good is the way the author explains how to defend a trade : what you can do when the market goes down after you sold naked puts, or if it goes up.
The strategy is well explained and clear (provided you know what options are) with a running example of several weeks : those who want to know what to do when a naked option goes in the money can safely read this book and get good answers. I'm not an options "newbie", I have made regular profits in the past selling options, but I learned some quite good defense tricks in this book.
However there's something that bothers me a little : the way the system is presented, it gives the impression that you get your overall profits right from the trade initiation, and then you spend your time adjusting and defending, reporting your positions as far as one or two years in the future, in order to avoid assignation.
The system returns about 20%~30% each year, over the long term : not that bad.
For those interested in options selling, I also highly recommend "Generate thousands on your stocks etc ..." by Samir Elias.

Lots of fluff, but good trading journal

This book has a silly title and for the most part offers very little new information for anyone who has traded options. In fact the first 2/3 of the book is a little difficult to get through, though there are some interesting aspects. By far the most useful part of the book was the 7-month trading journal where the author walks the reader through market movements and corresponding (reactionary) trades. Despite the rest of the book being just ok, the trading journal was very helpful to get an understanding of how the author implements the trading strategy.

That being said, it's a little hard to tell what this author is up to these days. I couldn't find much information about him so perhaps the strategy is no longer one he supports(?) Usually this type of book is trying to sell some premium newsletter service or website content, but this is not the case here (a welcome relief).

All in all, this is a 2- or 3-star book with a boost given for the trading journal. Experienced options traders (especially sellers) could probably skip it.

enjoyed the examples

The book offers many good example of actual trades and i found them very useful. The strategy suggested seemed to almost failure proof. I am a newbie to options, bought a few books on it and traded some. But this book opened my mind to the many possibilities for combinations of trades.

"Conservation Biology: Foundations, Concepts, Applications" is a great textbook for the serious biology student or resource management professional. Cutting edge content was immediately applicable in a faunal survey, and gave me a boost of confidence with more experienced colleagues. Dr. Van Dyke places the science and each of its paradigms in perspective: how did they develop? How are they used and have they persisted? Principles are covered thoroughly, with factual illustrations. Diagrams, figures and study questions help make complex principles understandable. The chapters on values and ethics in conservation is tastefully and powerfully written, addressing an aspect of conservation too often sidestepped. Conservation of habitats and landscapes and conservation of aquatic ecosystems are particularly interesting and useful material. The web site with practice questions was a helpful tool for the family-career-graduate studies time management juggling act.

Bad things come in threes for Toru Okada. He loses his job, his cat disappears, and then his wife fails to return from work. His search for his wife (and his cat) introduces him to a bizarre collection of characters, including two psychic sisters, a possibly unbalanced teenager, an old soldier who witnessed the massacres on the Chinese mainland at the beginning of the Second World War, and a very shady politician.

Haruki Murakami is a master of subtly disturbing prose. Mundane events throb with menace, while the bizarre is accepted without comment. Meaning always seems to be just out of reach, for the reader as well as for the characters, yet one is drawn inexorably into a mystery that may have no solution. The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is an extended meditation on themes that appear throughout Murakami's earlier work. The tropes of popular culture, movies, music, detective stories, combine to create a work that explores both the surface and the hidden depths of Japanese society at the end of the 20th century.

If it were possible to isolate one theme in The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, that theme would be responsibility. The atrocities committed by the Japanese army in China keep rising to the surface like a repressed memory, and Toru Okada himself is compelled by events to take responsibility for his actions and struggle with his essentially passive nature. If Toru is supposed to be a Japanese Everyman, steeped as he is in Western popular culture and ignorant of the secret history of his own nation, this novel paints a bleak picture. Kumiko Okada has a satisfying career and comes from a wealthy family. Toru, her husband, is a lawyer. Little mars this young Tokyo couple's life other than the disappearance of their cat. From that minor event, however, their life together devolves into a confusing web of intrigue. Kumiko disappears, telling Toru not to look for her. Then a collection of mystics, clairvoyants, and healers enter Toru's life. Reeling, he begins to spend hours in meditation at the bottom of a dry well, becoming a healer of sorts, until his work brings him into conflict with Kumiko's powerful brother-in-law?a conflict cast in moral terms, with Kumiko's soul in the balance. This very long journey is much less magical than simply strained. There are detours into the history of Japan's occupation of Manchuria and accounts of Japanese prisoners' lives in Siberian coal mines. Though interesting in parts, taken as a whole, this latest from Murakami (Dance, Dance, Dance, LJ 1/94) labors diligently toward some larger message but fails in the attempt.?Paul E. Unity Masquerades as a Kaleidoscope

Another reviewer has mentioned that far from being a scattered collection of independent incidents strung together by the coincidence of the central character's involvement, Murakami's "The Wind-up Bird Chronicle" is unified by means of its insistence on the problem of evil and what to do about it. Surely this is moving towards a clear understanding of the novel.

Evil, though, is a such a culturally grounded concept. Is evil sin? Maybe in monotheistic cultures, but I think in Murakami's novelistic universe--and this is a recurring feature of many discussions of Japanese religion, culture, and art--a more insightful way of comprehending evil is as "defilement," and this is the term Jay Rubin uses in his translation time and again. Defilement is what ties every character together: some inner filth that each character is trying to purge in some way. May Kasahara's idea of the physical manifestation of death as an oozy gray thing is the clearest picture we have of that unrelenting ghost that haunts everyone intersecting with Toru Okada's life. It is not regret or guilt. It is not emotional scarring. It is a sickening tangible object poisoning a person's life and threatening to overwhelm it. It must be washed off, or it will destroy whatever it comes in contact with.

Because defilement is such a defining feature of the work, it functions to create two broad sets of characters: the defilers and the defiled, where Kumiko's brother (Noboru Wataya) is the archetype of the defiler and Kumiko herself the archetype of the defiled. Confusion arises and the border between the two sets becomes blurred because the nature of defilement is to spread, and once Kumiko herself becomes defiled, she spreads that to those around her, principally to the central character, her husband Toru.

The third character type is found in Toru, whose beautiful quality is to absorb all the defilement, find a way to stop the spread of it, and then to wash it away, to expunge it in the final defeat of Noboru Wataya. Toru's beautiful quality is not easily won, though. The whole of "Wind-up Bird" tells of the immensely difficult quest for it, an encountering of many different faces of defiler and defiled, a repeated tasting of others' defilements, in order to learn the method of purification.

In a sense, then, "Wind-up Bird" is a classic love triangle, but it has been made archetypal: the defiled is fought over between the defiler and the purifier. Because of its reduction to the archetypal, all defiled characters are functionally the same, and all defilers are functionally the same. Malta Kano and Creta Kano, May Kasahara and Lieutenant Mamiya are all defiled; Noboru Wataya and the Russian intelligence officer, the woman on the phone and the man with the baseball bat are all defilers. Faces shift; functions remain the same. In every story, Toru is fighting for Kumiko, trying to wash out the defilement she is letting herself be destroyed by. In every story, Noboru Wataya is reaching out in every direction, to taint everything with his evil (defiling) intelligence.

Once the flimsy physical borders between these characters are down, the focus of the novel takes on a focused, white-hot intensity. It is almost as if the fire of it is so scorching that Murakami had to cloak it in an array of different facades. Also, by giving so many faces to the defiler and defiled, he insures that the reader will respond to one of them. One of the defilements will connect and lead to self-identification, and in this lies the great humanity of the novel, the thing that makes it so very intriguing for so many readers, the thing that makes it more than just a good yarn.

In the end, Toru is no closer to Kumiko. But he has fully become himself. He has merged with his unshakable purpose. Water flows unhindered in the long-dry well.

Reviewers seem to love this book or hate it. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. This beautifully written, difficult to understand book reminds me of the best of David Mitchell. Things happen to the lead character as he makes his way from one contact to the next, initially accepting everything and denying nothing, eventually accepting nothing and denying everything as he seeks the return of his lost wife. Some events are explained, many are not and so, in the end, the reader is required to do some of the work and try to fill in the missing pieces with too little information. Strangely, this is an experience not to be missed.

Murakami writes in a way that branches out like thought. Murakami trusts the reader to put thought into the book, to organize the events that take place, and think about the meaning behind them. Unlike many of his novels, this one ties up most of the plot at the end. There is a definite end to the book, though there is not a definite end to the story. If you're reading through it, I suggest thinking about the book on breaks to delve into your own thoughts on the scenarios and what they represent. It is a good read and I would recommend it.

We were shy about barging in on Randy Pausch's valuable time to ask him a few questions about his expansion of his famous Last Lecture into the book by the same name, but he was gracious enough to take a moment to answer. (See Randy to the right with his kids, Dylan, Logan, and Chloe.) As anyone who has watched the lecture or read the book will understand, the really crucial question is the last one, and we weren't surprised to learn that the "secret" to winning giant stuffed animals on the midway, like most anything else, is sheer persistence.

Amazon.com: I apologize for asking a question you must get far more often than you'd like, but how are you feeling?

Pausch: The tumors are not yet large enough to affect my health, so all the problems are related to the chemotherapy. I have neuropathy (numbness in fingers and toes), and varying degrees of GI discomfort, mild nausea, and fatigue. Occasionally I have an unusually bad reaction to a chemo infusion (last week, I spiked a 103 fever), but all of this is a small price to pay for walkin' around.

Amazon.com: Your lecture at Carnegie Mellon has reached millions of people, but even with the short time you apparently have, you wanted to write a book. What did you want to say in a book that you weren't able to say in the lecture?

Pausch: Well, the lecture was written quickly--in under a week. And it was time-limited. I had a great six-hour lecture I could give, but I suspect it would have been less popular at that length ;-).

A book allows me to cover many, many more stories from my life and the attendant lessons I hope my kids can take from them. Also, much of my lecture at Carnegie Mellon focused on the professional side of my life--my students, colleagues and career. The book is a far more personal look at my childhood dreams and all the lessons I've learned. Putting words on paper, I've found, was a better way for me to share all the yearnings I have regarding my wife, children and other loved ones. I knew I couldn't have gone into those subjects on stage without getting emotional.

Amazon.com: You talk about the importance--and the possibility!--of following your childhood dreams, and of keeping that childlike sense of wonder. But are there things you didn't learn until you were a grownup that helped you do that?

Pausch: That's a great question. I think the most important thing I learned as I grew older was that you can't get anywhere without help. That means people have to want to help you, and that begs the question: What kind of person do other people seem to want to help? That strikes me as a pretty good operational answer to the existential question: "What kind of person should you try to be?"

Amazon.com: One of the things that struck me most about your talk was how many other people you talked about. You made me want to meet them and work with them--and believe me, I wouldn't make much of a computer scientist. Do you think the people you've brought together will be your legacy as well?

Pausch: Like any teacher, my students are my biggest professional legacy. I'd like to think that the people I've crossed paths with have learned something from me, and I know I learned a great deal from them, for which I am very grateful. Certainly, I've dedicated a lot of my teaching to helping young folks realize how they need to be able to work with other people--especially other people who are very different from themselves.

Pausch: Two-part answer:

Actually, I was never good at the milk bottles. I'm more of a ring toss and softball-in-milk-can guy, myself. More seriously, though, most people try these games once, don't win immediately, and then give up. I've won *lots* of midway stuffed animals, but I don't ever recall winning one on the very first try. Nor did I expect to. That's why I think midway games are a great metaphor for life.

Made famous by his Last Lecture at Carnegie Mellon and the quick Internet proliferation of the video of the event, Pausch decided that maybe he just wasn't done lecturing. Despite being several months into the last stage of pancreatic cancer, he managed to put together this book. The crux of it is lessons and morals for his young and infant children to learn once he is gone. Despite his sometimes-contradictory life rules, it proves entertaining and at times inspirational. Surprisingly, the audiobook doesn't include the reading of Pausch's actual Last Lecture, which he gave on September 18, 2007, a month after being diagnosed. Erik Singer provides an excellent inflective voice that hints at the reveries of past experiences with family and children while wielding hope and regret for family he will leave behind. The first CD is enhanced with photos.

About the Author
Randy Pausch was a Professor of Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, and Design at Carnegie Mellon, where he was the co-founder of Carnegie Mellon's Entertainment Technology Center (ETC). He was a National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator and a Lilly Foundation Teaching Fellow. He had sabbaticals at Walt Disney Imagineering and Electronic Arts (EA), and consulted with Google on user interface design. Dr. Pausch received his bachelors in Computer Science from Brown University and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University. He was the director of the Alice (www.alice.org) software project, and had traveled in zero-gravity. He lived with his wife, Jai, and their three young children in Virginia.

Jeff Zaslow wrote the Wall Street Journal column that fueled the initial interest in Randy Pausch's lecture. He is also the co-author of Captain Chesley Sullenberger's The Highest Duty and the author of The Girls from Ames, both bestsellers.

A refreshing reckoning

I am recovering from the Whipple Procedure, diagnosed nine months ago with a PIMN lesion on my pancreas, I had the operation March 6th 2016.
I was told by a Doctor in September 2015 not to do anything as life after this procedure is compromised and a "quality of life" decision.
Unless you are told you will die, having to face your death, it is hard to appreciate how hard it is to define yourself, your loves, and how to tell all the people who have impacted your life how important they are.
Randy Pausch's effort is beyond commendable.
His life lessons, antidotes, as the critics say are from a "I, me" perspective but where were they suppose to come from? The evidence of his love of life, his family, his work are a gift to all of us who have to face difficult decisions and look death in the eye, but they are more than that, they are a reminder to those who go through life numb to the basic rules and the amazing things around you that put Quality in life.
I read this as I am recovering. I wish I had read it eight months ago and I would have made my decision to have the operation and the hope that it offers sooner.
It quickly summarizes the fear, anxiety, anger but most importantly imparts his version of what's important in a easy eloquent way. No it's not the final word on dying, but a noble attempt by an even nobler person.

Dr. Pausch does a great job at illustrating one of the things we often forget about, the bigger picture. He does it in a way that allows the reader to walk through some of his experiences as well as enabling you to extrapolate them to your own situations. The fact that a man with a terminal illness was able to collect his thoughts and prepare for a future where he would not be around in a way that will be infinitely beneficial to his children, but also applicable to the rest of the world is a true testament to his passion for teaching. This is a great read that will provide a great frame of reference for anyone who is experiencing troubles as well as those who have achieved extraordinary success. It brings us back to Earth, shows us that what is truly important is often right in front of us and instead of always reaching for more, which we are all inclined to do, we sometimes just need to enjoy what we have with who we are with.

HOW TO ORGANIZE YOUR LIFE BEFORE (OR AFTER) AN IMMINENT DEATH

I've had this book on my iPad for many months, afraid it would be preachy. Which it is, but that didn't turn me off. Just a guy very full of himself (deservedly so, it seems). Quite repetitive. Learned a couple of interesting things about the IT world at a level in which I do not participate at all. Just a consumer here. The best part was the amusing photos of the author sprinkled here and there, all of which reinforced a point he had made. Because of the way the book is organized, in the end I did not feel sadness or empathy about the guy's plight - early death - because it seems he handled it all so well. And he was so cheerful!
