About the Author
Tony Farrell is a graduate of Bath University, where he was fortunate to study with Peter Lutz. His fortunes grew further when he moved in 1974 to Canada and the Zoology Department at the University of British Columbia to complete his Ph.D. degree under the superb tutelage of Dave Randall. In 2004, Tony returned to UBC when he accepted an endowed research chair in Sustainable Aquaculture.
In between these positions at UBC, Tony was employed at the University of Southern California (PDF), the University of New Brunswick (sessional lecturer), Mount Allison University (first real job) and Simon Fraser University (moving through the ranks to a full professor). In addition to highly controlled laboratory experiments on fish cardiorespiratory physiology, Tony is committed to working on animals in their own environment. Therefore, his research on fish physiology has taken him on an Alpha Helix expedition to the Amazon, the University of Gothenburg and the Kristineberg Marine Research Station in Sweden, the Portobello Marine Biological Station in New Zealand, the University of Christchurch and Massey University in New Zealand, the Bamfield Marine Science Station and the Huntsman Marine Station in Canada, the University of Aarhus in Denmark, the University of Adelaide Charles and Darwin University in Australia, and to the Danish Arctic Marine Station on Disco Island in Greenland. These travels have allowed him to work and with many superb collaborators word-wide, as well as study the physiology of over 70 different species of fish. Tony has received a number of awards for his scientific contributions: an honorary degree from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden; Awards of Excellence from the American Fisheries Society for Fish Physiology, Conservation and Management; the Fry Medal from the Canadian Society of Zoologists; and the Beverton Medal from the Fisheries Society of the British Isles.

About the Author
Rose Herceg is an entrepreneur, strategist, and author. She cofounded Pophouse, specializing in social forecasting, market research, and business strategy, in 1998 before selling it in 2006. Until recently Rose was strategy director of the STW Group, Australasia's largest communications group, working across 70 companies on strategy, social forecasting, trends analysis,�and innovation. She is the author of two books, The Seven Myths and Seven Realities of Generation X and Ideas Generation�and she�currently writes for Crikey.com's Power Index website.

Fun and interesting read - great insight on power

Really enjoyed this book. Ms Herceg makes a strong argument for the "good" use of power, and she has made me a believer. Excellent timing given the political machinations at the moment. Easy read, funny, but insightful. Great use of stories to make the point clear to the reader - lots of "aha" moments in this one. Highly recommended, will look for more from this author.

About the Author
An astrologer, journalist and writer, Ciro Discepolo was born in Naples in 1948 (on the 17th of July, at 5:40 am). He worked for twenty years for the most popular daily of Naples, Il Mattino, writing articles on science, medicine, informatics, literature and astrology. He has always refused to cast the so-called ‘horoscopes of the solar signs’ for that newspaper, as well as for any other newspaper or magazine. He worked (at the age of 20) for five years at the CNR (National Research Council) as Research Helper and, for two years, as Electronic Measures Laboratory’s head in the Istituto Motori of Naples, CNR. He has been dealing with astrology since 1970. He has written over 70 books, most of them best-sellers in Italy as well as abroad and he has published over 1,000 astrological lessons on YouTube and about 150 short Astrology Essays on Google Books. In 1990 he founded the quarterly Ricerca ‘90. He has been doing statistical researches from the very beginning of his interest in astrology. During the early ‘90s, he obtained brilliant results with researches on astral heredity on a sample of over 75,000 subjects, in different years and always under the control of different experts of statistics. The astrological rules #1 and #2, published in his Transits and Solar Returns but already described decades earlier in other publications of his, have been statistically demonstrated by Didier Castille. These rules were also demonstrated in over 40 years of studies by some researchers of Zurich University and they are the only statements of an astrologer, of every time, demonstrated by Official Science. He has been holding seminars, courses and lectures in different universities and cultural centres in Italy and abroad. He particularly deals with Predictive Astrology, Aimed Solar Returns and Aimed Lunar Returns. According to many colleagues, he may be considered the greatest living expert of this area of study. Not only has he written many texts on this specific segment of the art of Urania – he can also rely on the experience of more than 25,000 aimed birthdays. The outcomes of these aimed birthdays have been recorded and analyzed by his consultants and himself at the end of each year after the consultant’s departure for the aimed birthday. He is deeply interested in informatics. Astrologically speaking, he followed the school of André Barbault. He founded the school of the Active Astrology.

Paradigm busting bomb in a small package

This is a short but fascinating work on the subject of Elections (choosing the right time to take action). I consider myself a friend of the author - yet, without bias, I must say that this manual is one of the best pieces I've read on the subject for a long time. It's based on logical concepts consistent with the practical astrological doctrine found in his many other textbooks. But what's most important is that these ideas work in practice, and to me, that's what astrology is all about.

Nevertheless, this is not a book for people who are incontrovertibly loyal to Renaissance and Indian methods, but there are plenty of books covering Elections and Muhurta (the Indian version) for them to enjoy; Mr. Discepolo is not afraid to break new ground. His view is rooted in a logical yet minimalist perspective, and avoids unnecessary mythologies that complicate practice and confuse results.

Ciro does tend to ramble a bit, but I personally don't mind his anecdotal prose - in fact, I think it's part of his charm. Since I discovered the book, I've had the opportunity to put the principles into practice, and gotten excellent results. I would immediately recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to USE astrology in a sensible and practical way.

A very good explanation of one of the tools of active astrology

This book is an excellent complement for the culture of anybody interested in active astrology. As you know, the active astrology is based on different techniques, aimed to improve quality of life. The main tool, probably known by everybody, is represented by the aimed solar return. Other significant tools are: aimed lunar returns, astro-geography and exorcization of symbols.
Last, but not least, elective astrology is a precious tool to be used on a daily basis to improve life. With this technique you can define the best moment to start anything important (or not) in your life.
The main rules are not difficult; this book easily illustrates the theory and the practice of elective astrology, and it gives a rigorous answer to the most difficult questions: 1) when there is the real elective moment to be considered, field where beginners could make wrong assumptions and 2) what are the only astrologic positions that count.
Surely a must have for all practitioners of active astrology

Lots of great photo's and information to detail not only the human skeleton and its life cycle progression but how to identify many causes of death.
Honestly I would recommend this not just for students but for novel writers as well. It is fascinating.

Their validity is to be measured not by verisimilitude but by value. The fruits of thought are not “true,” but especially where they are false, it may be important to act as if they were true… Vaihinger’s chief originality consists in his defining of fictions and his distinction of fictions from hypotheses on the one hand, and from dogmatisms on the other. An hypothesis is a tentative discovery about the universe; a fiction is a deliberate, often clearly false and internally contradictory invention of thought… Evolution is the hypothesis that man is descended from the lower animals. We assume that we can indirectly turn to the remote facts which would justify that hypothesis. But the concept of infinity in the calculus, the atom and the ether in physics, the economic man in Adam Smith, are deliberate self-contradictory fictions, and fictions at variance with all experience. But though they are not only imaginary, false to the reality they allegedly represent and logically incoherent, they nevertheless facilitate thought and proper action. They are vital lies, human conveniences. They are the faiths, the palpably false faiths, the clearly useful falsities by which we live… The discovery that fictions were fictions has led, in the past, says Vaihinger, to an abandonment of them, and a turning to other fictions believed to be truer. Pathetic and foolish adventure! What the race needs is more faith in its own effective imaginations. The myths that it has told itself, the world pictures that it has made, are not to be dismissed because they are found to be creations of the imagination. They tally with no world and they carry the canker of logical inconsistency within them. The important thing is their utility; their human scope and mortal relevance. If we ceased making fictions, we should cease altogether to be. Let us beware to plunge from fruitful fictions to less fruitful ones that masquerade as truths and are really dogmatisms. Although the author seems to have struck to the core of human motivation -that is, living one's fictions "as if" they were reality, similar to Ernest Becker's theories claiming that cultural fictions are created by mankind to deny death - his dry, incomprehensible style and monotone writing made the theory mostly inaccessible.

The Origin of Alternate History...

"Lest Darkness Fall..." is arguably the novel that began the entire science fiction sub-genre of alternate history. Centering around a Ph.D. candidate studying in Rome in the late 1930s, early 1940s, it tackles the idea question of "What would you do if you had the chance to save the Roman Empire?"
Perched at the very edge of the twilight of the (Western) Roman civilization, it realistically tackles the political, scientific and cultural problems of the 5th and 6th centuries A.D. in southern Europe. De Camp was not only a famous science fiction author (a lesser-known contemporary of Isaac Asimov), but he was a published historian and classicist in his own right. This book showcases all three of those fields in one go - at the height of his writing talent.
The short story paired with this, "To Bring The Light" by David Drake, is less meant as a serious contender in terms of literary quality than an homage to de Camp's work. Dealing with the founding of the Roman civilization in much the way that "Lest Darkness Fall..." deals with it's death throes, it succeeds in showing the David Drake's admiration for de Camp's work.
Ultimately, though, I'd buy the book for "Lest Darkness Fall...": it's a surprisingly ignored but wonderful novel that paved the way for what has become an entire sub-field of science fiction. Whether you like alternate history or not, though, this book should not be missed.

Creative, Concise and Appealing

Martin Padway, mild-mannered archaeologist, is visiting Rome when he is thrust backwards in time... all the way back to the sixth century A.D. The Roman Empire is fading fast... facing foes on all sides... with the thousand-year blight we now know as the Dark Ages fast approaching. Can a single man -- Padway --change history and prevent the fall of Rome? Nothing less than the 'Age of Enlightenment' hangs in the balance.
The literary descendent of 'A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court', de Camp lets Padway grapple with raw issues. I found these areas the story's most interesting sections: how to make a living, having arrived with only modern currency in hand... how to avoid the authorities, given their proclivity to brand any new technology 'witchcraft'... how to assemble allies, fend off enemies and stay healthy in an environment not conducive to outsiders.
Because it was written in 1939, there is a level of 'political incorrectness' that is entertainingly fresh. Italian women, Muslims, the French and others are insulted with broad brush-strokes. Nonetheless, it is historically informative, important from a literary standpoint and makes for interesting reading. Despite its age, it is a fluid, fast read. de Camp had a lot of interesting things to say... and said them well.

A classic story with a mediocre one hanging on

"Lest Darkness Fall" is considered a classic of science fiction, and justifiably so. If you enjoy "displaced in time" stories, or if the idea interests you, you can expect to like the book. The hero is a PhD-to-be who gets mysteriously plunged back to Rome in its declining years, and takes it on himself to use what he knows and avert the coming dark ages. It is funny in places, sad in a couple of places, and exciting all through. The other part of this book is a rather forgettable story by an excellent writer, David Drake. If you enjoy this book, look up "Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen" by Piper, or "Island in the Sea of Time" by S.M. Stirling
