Masterson's Strategies for a Successful and Abundant Life

I have enjoyed Michael Masterson's writing in the "Early to Rise" e-newsletter for a few years now, and I've also enjoyed a couple of his earlier books, including "Seven Years to Seven Figures." So, when I learned a new book he'd written was coming out that focused on his strategies and systems for creating a master plan to live an abundant life, I immediately ordered it from my local bookstore and moved it into my immediate reading list. I was that interested in what Masterson had to say on the topic, and having just finished reading the book this morning, I was not disappointed in the least.

"The Pledge: Your Master Plan For An Abundant Life" by Michael Masterson is and enjoyable, motivating, and informative book that is meant to be used, not just read. Masterson makes a point in one of his chapters, and near the end in the conclusion that information in not the key to success and happiness, but the acting on information is what counts. He essentially shares the strategies he's used to become very successful in most people's definition of success. Not just financially, but in the quality of life lived. (Something he stresses often.) However, he is also one to point out that it does not come easy by just thinking positive or by working only four hours a week. To become financially successful, one must work. And Masterson shares that one must often work hard. But when the hard work pays off, it can often open up areas of quality recreation that success brings.

In the Introduction, there is a short test to help you look at your life and determine how good it really is. If nothing else, this gets you thinking about what your life is like, and if you want to make positive changes, it is good to look at where you are beginning. He also discusses some obstacles to achievement that many face. Next come the eight chapters, which are called "Parts One - Eight."

Part One focuses on your Master Plan and what it takes to change your life. Essentially this part tells you why you need to plan and motivates you to get started doing it. Part Two is about goal setting, and Masterson shares how he does it and why he recommends you do it too. Part Three focuses on living day by day abundantly. Masterson's key? Become an early riser. He explains why and provides some suggestions on how to get up early if you aren't already. I also enjoyed the look into his typical day. It was sort of like Donald Trump did in a couple of his books. This chapter also had suggestions on how to be on top of everything. Definitely some good advice.

Part Four was titled "Creating A Richer, More Enjoyable Life." I liked this chapter and the examples of Golden, Vaporous and Acidic Choices. Reading this chapter should get people looking at the choices they make and what they get from those choices. He also provides some strategies for living a simpler and fuller life that may resonate with many people in this complex world we now live in. Additionally, there are other suggestions for living that if implemented would help you enjoy life better.

Part Five deals with the push you need to succeed, or as Masterson puts it, giving yourself a kick in the pants. The Junkies Secret is not a way I've looked at this topic before, but it made good sense and I think the message here can help people become more motivated to go for their dreams. This chapter also looks at positive thinking, dealing with fear, and taking the big leap. Part Six discusses the skills of the most successful and how you can learn and implement them into your own life. I read a ton, but I still picked up a tip or two that I plan on using to read even more and get more from what I read.

In Part Seven, Masterson shares his ways to defeat obstacles that get in the way of success. Like the other chapters, there are some good strategies here. Topics include e-mail problems, being in a rut, and nine steps to defeating depression. Part Eight focuses on building wealth, and Masterson shares different ways people can accumulate wealth and the ways he's done it. This is not a how to, but rather a look at directions you can look at, and then it will be up to you to pick one and learn how to implement that course to make money.

Masterson then sums up the book with a conclusion that lets you know what you've just learned, but also encourages you to become a better person, and above all, take action now. His final words, "The time to act is now. Seize it!"

I enjoy books in the business and self-help categories. They motivate me to continue to drive forward and if I implement one or two strategies from a book that help me advance in an area of my life, it was well worth the time to read and study. This book is one of the most enjoyable and useful books in this area that I've read in a long time. I have already marked the sections I want to look at again as I try some of Masterson's suggestions in my own planing. I think anyone who reads this book and actually acts on the information provided will undoubtedly advance on their journey toward living an enriched and abundant life.

Glad I didn't spend more...

Being an aspiring copywriter is one of my two business plans in place for the 2011. As such I became of aware of this book since he is considered a guru in the field. Always looking for ways to improve my daily productivity and organization, I had high hopes. The book starts out strong and helps you examine your current life and situation. This is good I thought and he is encouraging that ANYONE can be successful. He first helps you define what success is for you, which is great and so important before defining goals. He then moves on to importance of planning by starting long term and working backwards to daily goals (for some this may be earth shattering..for me not so much). After that, the message is if you want to be successful, emulate me. To me this was where things start to fall apart. The rest of the book is a road map for success according to his beliefs and work systems. Some are certainly worthwhile considering. Others seem far fetched and not practical....though he obviously believes in them I would question their applicability for most. A couple examples of where he lost me:

* Take no more than a two minute shower (it takes me two minutes just to shave). Should one skip the soap?
* Feel tired in the middle of the day? Take a nap wherever you are...like under a table before a meeting. I'm so glad he has the money to tell the rest of the world where to go. There was no mention of what portable alarm clock he recommends.
* Reply to emails only at the end of the day as you need to take care of what is most important to YOU first...otherwise how will you accomplish your personal goals? He also suggests that you will write shorter emails at the end of the day because you want to be done with work. This forces you to truncate anything not absolutely necessary in the email (bet those emails are good for maintaining relationships and explaining things clearly). Yikes. Maybe if you are self-employed, but for those in the corporate world? An appendix on resume writing might be in order.
* He talks specifically about what your office should look and be like in order to be successful. Did you know you need dimmers on the lights in your office? Oh yes for those naps.

All this is not to say the book is not worthwhile. It is good reading with many good take aways....but you kinda need to look for them and figure out what is practical for you and your life. Which is so odd because as I said the book is meant to be a recipe for success and is so specific about so many things. I love to cook and tinker with recipes all the time, but you don't get the feeling tinkering with the recipe much is advocated by Mr. Masterson.

Sweet baby cakes am I glad I bought this. The first few chapters hands down are the reasons I passed ANCC. I went on to read the entire book and found it easier than Leik. I just wish both volumes came together !

A tricky title...

By mistake I bought the book without answers, and what should I do now???
How can I check my answers now?! What about the audio?! What in earth do you guys publish a book without answers and a CD audio?! Even if I was taking an IELTS course with a teacher correcting the answers, it doesn't make any sense... I can't return the book because I live in Brazil... Too bad again...

About the Author

Bret Contreras, PhD, MS, CSCS, has become known in the strength and conditioning industry as the Glute Guy because of his expertise in helping clients develop strong, shapely glutes. In 2015 he earned his PhD in sport science from the Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand, where he studied under biomechanics expert John Cronin. Contreras has conducted numerous electromyography experiments in his research.

As the former owner of Lifts Studio in Scottsdale, Arizona, Contreras worked closely with hundreds of clients ranging from sedentary people to elite athletes, and he invented a glute-strengthening machine called the Hip Thruster. He currently trains figure competitors, writes programs for clients from all over the world, and consults for various professional sport teams. He is the author of the bestselling book Bodyweight Strength Training Anatomy (Human Kinetics, 2014) and coauthor of Strong Curves (Victory Belt, 2013).

Contreras is a distinguished lecturer in strength and conditioning, presenting at many conferences throughout the United States, including those hosted by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). He is editor in chief of the NCSA’s Personal Training Quarterly and cofounder of Strength & Conditioning Research Review. Superbly researched and much needed volume on bodyweight training

Bret Contreras ("the Glute Guy") has outdone himself with this book. I have been bodyweight training for about 10 months prior to this book coming out and I had learned a lot. However, even after all the research I had done, this book further enhanced my understanding of how to exercise effectively without external resistance.

Furthermore, with 150+ exercises to choose from, I learned a bunch more cool exercises and some interesting twists on old classics.

If you're a beginner, this book is great. If you're an experienced bodyweight trainer, this book will give you even more insight on how to work out effectively. Many people will read this book and be blown away by the fact that you can do so much with just your body weight.

The book is beautifully presented, with each exercise and the muscles worked illustrated and fully described.

Bret Contreras is renowned for his attention to detail and effectively communicating the science of strength and conditioning. In Bodyweight Strength Training Anatomy, he continues in that vein. It is a must have for every serious strength trainer.

Bodyweight Strength Training Anatomy

I've been training exclusively with bodyweight exercises from the book You Are Your Own Gym by Mark Lauren for about a year now and have achieved great results. Im a big fan of this type of training, so naturally this book piqued my interest. It has good exercises, and it does a decent job of illustrating the primary and secondary muscles being worked. Overall, I enjoyed the read and had only the below critiques:

1. I found exercise descriptions should have been more descriptive, especially for the more complex movements like the one-arm push-up, especially since the illustrations show only the finishing positions. The devil's in the details, especially when you expect people to train alone with only your book as their guide.

2. I would have liked to see more ways to increase or decrease the difficulty of these movements or been given recommendations on how to work up to the harder exercises. Unlike with lifting weights or using machines, with bodyweight training you can't just add or remove plates or adjust a pin. Without knowing how to adjust the difficulty, the usefulness of many of these movements is highly limited. Exercise progressions and tips on adjusting movement intensity are a must for any book on Bodyweight training to be truly effective.

3. Because of the above stated reason (not knowing how to progress or adjust movement difficulty), it's impossible to create a real strength training program with the given bodyweight exercises. Yes, you can exercise, but you can't really "train" with an end goal other than to increase reps. The author's program in the back of the book is evidence to this as he does not provide rep goals for any of the exercises and oddly suggests training the entire body 5 times per week, using the same exercises. That is without a doubt "exercising" and not what I would consider strength training with clear objectives in mind. When using a good strength training program that makes use of whole body training sessions, every other day is plenty for the average person. And since movement intensity needs to be adjusted in order to keep you in the appropriate rep range for the development of strength, in my opinion, "Bodyweight Exercise Anatomy" would have been a more appropriate title for this book.

Like I said, overall, I like the book, and it does contain good information. However, I was only able to add a few minor tools to my bodyweight training arsenal that I hadn't already picked up from using You Are Your Own Gym for the last year.

Great Reference

This is a awesome book. It provides information on exercises you can do pretty much anywhere using body weight, and it has useful pointers for correctly executing each one. The images highlight which muscle group you're working on most, so it makes it easier to choose which exercises to focus on.
Overall, it's an informative guide to working out and a good reference to have.

A Solid Analysis

Professor Parrott's work on the logistical side of Early Modern recruiting and procurement is a much needed addition to the corpus of literature on the Early Modern state and Early Modern warfare. Seeking to overturn long-standing assumptions about the quality of "mercenary" soldiers and fleets, Parrott explores the possibility, rarely acknowledged by historians, that early modern states could often effectively wage war with armies and fleets raised by contract. The interaction between monarchs, state bureaucracy, the recruiting captains, and the soldiers themselves has never been so well examined, and is informed by Parrott's wide focus across multiple states. In challenging the assumption that contract armies of this period were not wholly ineffective and cutthroat bands, Parrott also challenges a progressive notion that the state's control over recruitment, procurement, training, and discipline was a forgone conclusion; instead Parrott offers different criteria to assess the military efficacy of the armies of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries within the context of their times, and it suggests that states often found this system to be more effective than other methods of mobilization and deployment. It suggests in some cases a complimentary relationship between recruiters and their contract holders, one that was not as antithetical as has been suggested, and between soldiers and their paymasters.

The result is that Parrott's work may alter the understanding of the "Military Revolution" thesis, and suggest revisions to our understanding of the "mercenary" who has become a byword for Early Modern warfare. The book also examines the processes of the logistical tasks carried out by both private captains and state bureaucracy, and focuses on coordination as well as dissent between these two interwoven agencies.

A much needed Academic work to breathe more life into this period, I recommend it highly. The conclusions are controversial in some cases, but this has never been a subject without controversy. Indeed, in an age when discussions of private military forces are growing and in some cases being implemented, this read gives a vital insight to the age old problem of feeding Mars and highlights the solutions found by Europe's states, for better or worse, in the Early Modern world.

How Mercenaries Created the Modern Army

'Until recently treated as gangs of thugs-for-hire available to states unwilling to maintain armies of their own, in recent years mercenaries and military entrepreneurs have been getting more respect in the literature, a trend to which this is a very useful contribution. Parrott (New College, Oxford), who also wrote Richelieu's Army: War, Government and Society in France, 1624-1642 (Cambridge Studies in Early Modern History), essentially argues that mercenaries were the standing armies of the times, times in which state resources, even of major players, such as France or the Hapsburgs, were so administratively weak as to obviate the maintenance of substantial standing forces. He goes on to argue that mercenaries laid the foundations for the military institutions that the great powers would create as their bureaucratic institutions developed. Parrott spends about a third of the book looking at the period from the mid-fifteenth to the early seventeenth century, and then plunges into the Thirty Years' War, which arguably was the acme of the age of the mercenary and the military entrepreneur. The balance of the book examines the work of the military entrepreneurs during the protracted struggle, the conduct of operations, with many at times surprising examples, and how these experiences underpinned the rise of standing armies later in the Seventeenth Century. Parrott concludes by making interesting comparisons between the military entrepreneurs of the Seventeenth Century and the newer ones of the Twenty-first, with the rise of the private security and military corporations that have been playing not always laudable roles in recent conflicts. An important read for those interested in mercs, the Thirty Years War, the rise of modern military institutions, and the new era of private military entrepreneurs.'

Preface

This text has evolved from a need for a single volume that embraces a wide range of topics in fluid mechanics. The material consists of two parts — four chapters on macroscopic or relatively large-scale phenomena, followed by eight chapters on microscopic or relatively small-scale phenomena.

Throughout, we have tried to keep in mind topics of industrial importance to the chemical engineer.

Part I—Macroscopic fluid mechanics. Chapter 1 is concerned with basic fluid concepts and definitions, and also a discussion of hydrostatics. Chapter 2 covers the three basic rate laws, in the form of mass, energy, and momentum balances. Chapters 3 and 4 deal with fluid flow through pipes and other types of chemical engineering equipment, respectively.

Part II—Microscopic fluid mechanics. Chapter 5 is concerned with the fundamental operations of vector analysis and the development of the basic differential equations that govern fluid flow in general. Chapter 6 presents several examples that show how these basic equations can be solved to give solutions to representative problems in which viscosity is important, including polymer-processing, in rectangular, cylindrical, and spherical coordinates. Chapter 7 treats the broad class of inviscid flow problems known as irrotational flows; the theory also applies to flow in porous media, of importance in petroleum production and the underground storage of natural gas. Chapter 8 analyzes two-dimensional flows in which there is a preferred orientation to the velocity, which occurs in situations such as boundary layers, lubrication, calendering, and thin films. Turbulence and analogies between momentum and energy transport are treated in Chapter 9. Bubble motion, two-phase flow in horizontal and vertical pipes, and fluidization — including the motion of bubbles in fluidized beds — are discussed in Chapter 10. Chapter 11 introduces the concept of non-Newtonian fluids. Finally, Chapter 12 discusses the Matlab PDE Toolbox as an instrument for the numerical solution of problems in fluid mechanics.

In our experience, an undergraduate fluid mechanics course can be based on Part I plus selected parts of Part II. And a graduate course can be based on essentially the whole of Part II, supplemented perhaps by additional material on topics such as approximate methods, stability, and computational fluid mechanics.

There is an average of about five completely worked examples in each chapter. The numerous end-of-chapter problems have been classified roughly as easy (E), moderate (M), or difficult (D). Also, the University of Cambridge has very kindly given permission — graciously endorsed by Prof. J.F. Davidson, F.R.S. — for several of their chemical engineering examination problems to be reproduced in original or modified form, and these have been given the additional designation of “(C).”

The website engin.umich/~fmche is maintained as a “ bulletin board” for giving additional information about Fluid Mechanics for Chemical Engineers — hints for problem solutions, errata, how to contact the authors, etc. — as proves desirable.

The text was composed on a Power Macintosh 8600/200 computer using the TeXtures “typesetting” program. Eleven-point type was used for the majority of the text. Most of the figures were constructed using the MacDraw Pro, Claris-CAD, Excel, and Kaleidagraph applications.

Professor Fox, to whom this book is dedicated, was a Cambridge engineering graduate who worked from 1933—1937 at Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd., Billingham, Yorkshire. Returning to Cambridge, he taught engineering from 1937—1946 before being selected to lead the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge during its formative years after the end of World War II. As a scholar and a gentleman, Fox was a shy but exceptionally brilliant person who had great insight into what was important and who quickly brought the department to a preeminent position. He succeeded in combining an industrial perspective with intellectual rigor. Fox relinquished the leadership of the department in 1959, after he had secured a permanent new building for it (carefully designed in part by himself) before his untimely death in 1964.

Fox was instrumental in bringing Kenneth Denbigh, John Davidson, Peter Danckwerts and others into the department. Danckwerts subsequently wrote an appreciation (P.V. Danckwerts, “Chemical Engineering Comes to Cambridge,” The Cambridge Review, pp. 53—55, 28 February 1983) of Fox's talents, saying, with almost complete accuracy: “Fox instigated no research and published nothing.” How times have changed — today, unless he were known personally, his resume would probably be cast aside and he would stand little chance of being hired, let alone of receiving tenure! However, his lectures, meticulously written handouts, enthusiasm, genius, and friendship were a great inspiration to me, and I have much pleasure in acknowledging his impact on my career.

About the Author

James O. Wilkes is Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan, where he served as department chairman and assistant dean for admissions. From 1989 to 1992, he was an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor. Wilkes coauthored Applied Numerical Methods (Wiley, 1969) and Digital Computing and Numerical Methods (Wiley, 1973). He received his bachelor s degree from the University of Cambridge and his M.S. and Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan. His research interests involve numerical methods for solving a wide variety of engineering problems.

This book is concise,clear and easy to understand.

I have a good chance to study this course with Prof. Wilkes at Petroleum and petrochemical college, Chulalonkorn University in Thailand. This book is very useful for me because it's easy to understand and clear in every step. For example,some part of the fluid mechanics, I think it's very difficult for me to understand in the past(in bachelor's degree) but when I study this book, it make me clear and easy. I think this book is suitable for the beginner than the others that I met before.
