Greek for the Ears
By William E. Turner Jr.
As an intermediate Greek student who struggles with remembering vocabulary, I am very grateful to Jonathan Pennington and Zondervan for producing this tool. There are two CD's in this set, which cover all the words in the New Testament that occur 10 times or more. The accompanying booklet lists those words and their definitions in the order in which they are spoken. The purpose of this tool is to help the Greek student learn the vocabulary of the New Testament.
The benefits of having Greek vocabulary in audio format are generally obvious. First, it is portable and the student is able to take it wherever he goes. In fact the Greek student should never be without his vocabulary and this tool helps greatly to that end. Secondly, it involves more of the senses, which helps in the learning process. For those who learn well through audible learning methods this will be invaluable. Thirdly, the booklet makes this all the more useful for the beginner to read along with the pronunciation. As well it further engages another sense as the vocabulary is listened to.
There are a few disadvantages to this tool, which hopefully would be remedied, in a latter edition. First, the glosses, or definitions, are the bare bones. You only receive about one or two options for a definition. One understands the need to do so with this medium, but it leads to the impression that there is not too much flexibility with the definitions when in actuality there are. It may be helpful to beef up the definitions at least a little bit. Secondly, it would have been more helpful if the definitions followed exactly those given in either Mounce's Basics of Biblical Greek or Trenchard's Complete Vocabulary Guide. There is some inconsistency here which if fixed would make this set all the more useful. Lastly, the individual tracks should have been further broken down into approximately 15-20 words instead of 30-40 words. Shorter tracks would allow for quicker repetition and therefore easier memorization.
Overall this is an extremely helpful tool that every beginning and intermediate Greek student should utilize. I only wish I discovered it earlier.

I wish I had these when I was learning Greek
By Douglas VanderMeulen
Flash cards was the only means of mastering Greek vocabulary just a few years ago. With today's CD players, and comupters a Greek student can hear, listen, and see (if you use the helplful booklet that comes with the CD) the vocabulary. The more senses used the quicker the mastery of the meanings. In all my language expereince (I have taken Latin, Greek Hebrew, and Spanish) vocabulary was always the secert to success. The difficulty of grammar lessons is greatly increased or decreased by your with your confidence level with the vocabulary. Being able to hear the Greek pronounced correctly is very benefical. Your confidence level will grow quickly. If you are a new Greek student or one who is seeking to do some review you will find this CD very helpful. Don't pass this by. This CD will play on any regular CD player or computer - including Macs.

Pennington, would you mind doing an 'advanced' version?
By A Customer
This is, so far as I know, the first CD of koine terms with which one can become more familiar with that type of Biblical Greek. Unfortunately, the words are read in order of decreasing frequency (you know, that tiresome stress on how often a word occurs in the Bible, which is better spent on what the word MEANS). Alphabetical order would make the words easier to remember, practice, use.
Moreover, the definitions given are extremely rudimentary. Then again, for the price, this CD is a BARGAIN just the same, and -- until Pennington or someone else does a better one -- should be purchased.
In fact, I'll buy another one after the holidays! 'Groaning in travail for a more-advanced edition! ('Yes, charge more, who cares, we need a more scholarly treatment -- and include ATTIC usage in Bible too?) Oh boy. Greedy greedy greedy me.

Straightforward and efficient
By NYNHCA
I found this book to be the best resource for getting my studying started and understanding the scope of all the exams. I also used a few Kaplan guides, which I found to be overkill. For a few of the exams, I used the specific Ballast books, but I only used them because I was able to borrow them for free. They were great as well, but provided more questions and exams than I could have ever found the time or desire to pursue.
If you're preparing to start taking exams, this book is the best resource, and will save you a lot of time. If you think you're weak in a particular area, use this book first, and then consider supplemental information/books from Ballast or Kaplan.
btw, I passed all my exams the first time around.

Consistently good study guide
By gep
This is a great study guide- very comprehensive. I've used this as my primary study guide and have been doing well on the ARE. I think it's well written and isn't so dry that it's impossible to get through. I'm giving 4 stars because of some things I didn't like regarding formatting/ information location (that resulted in being unprepared for some questions).

Be sure to review the actual ARE test guidelines from NCARB. The chapters split the subject matter up fairly well, but there are a few where the material is in the wrong section (i.e. Vertical Transportation should be in "Building Systems" chapter, but is in the "BD&CS" chapter).

There are 2 chapters at the very end - Chapters 55 & 56 - Code info- and they should absolutely be the first chapters in the book!!!! They are not and I just realized, 3 tests in, that these chapters exist. It's my fault for not reading the T of C, but I think they're not placed properly. This is critical stuff on most every test and doesn't belong hidden in the back.

OK that is all- would definitely recommend. I went through each chapter and made my own flashcards for review a few days prior to the test. It's a lot of trees, but effective!

The Locals: A Contemporary Investigation of the Bigfoot/Sasquatch Phenomenon, by Thom Powell

Bigfoots ARE The Locals. They live here. They were here before we humans showed up on the continent and they will likely outlast us. This is a 'bigfoot book' yet it probes much deeper than a simple treatment of the hackneyed question of 'Does Bigfoot exist?'. This book delves into such questions as why bigfoots exist, why they behave as they do, and why they have not yet been, and may never be dragged into the spotlight of science and the media. And don't look to 'science' for answers, because science is currently unequipped to shed any light on this profound anthropological mystery.

A MODERN TAKE & A FASCINATING BOOK!
By Chris Orcutt
Like most amateur Bigfoot enthusiasts, I have read dozens of books on the phenomenon, but Thom Powell's THE LOCALS is truly the new standard to which all future books on the subject will be compared.

There are a number of reasons why this is such an excellent Bigfoot/Sasquatch book; however, rather than write endless paragraphs on them, allow me to make my points as a list:

1. Powell doesn't waste his or the reader's time by rehashing (at least in lengthy detail) the "classic" cases--the Albert Ostman story, Ruby Creek, Mt. St. Helens, the Patterson film, etc. Instead, Powell focuses his energies on relating and interpreting more modern (or previously less publicized) accounts.

2. Unlike some Bigfoot researchers who do what Sherlock Holmes described as a "cardinal" error--using facts selectively to fit theories--Powell lays out the facts of Bigfoot encounters as patterns, then develops theories that fit those patterns. This is truly the use of scientific method, and in an arena where conjecture runs rampant, Powell's approach is refreshing.

3. As far as I know, Powell is the first Bigfoot researcher who has posited the idea that Bigfoots may possess "alternative" higher abilities, which would explain both the eerie similarities between accounts of encounters and the reason why the creatures have managed to elude humans so well for so long. For example, Powell spends several pages in the book discussing the possibility that Bigfoots may possess infrasound capabilities (emitting low-level frequencies to paralyze and disorient humans or prey). Bigfoots having this ability would explain the "I'm being watched" sensation so often felt by people venturing into an area populated by Bigfoots.

4. As a writer myself and former philosophy major, I was impressed by Powell's reference to Occam's Razor--the idea that when faced with several competing theories or explanations for a phenomenon, the simplest is usually the best. Powell uses Occam's Razor to show that Bigfoots existing makes more sense than the main alternative: it is the result of a widespread hoax/mass hallucination. There are many other moments in his work where he lucidly describes complex ideas and scientific theories.

5. The book is very well-written, a fact which makes up for the lack of pictures and illustrations.

6. Powell's discussions of remote cameras, the Skookum Cast, and habituation are both enlightening and entertaining.

My only criticism of this book is that I don't agree with Powell's idea that we should be trying to habituate Bigfoots to human presence. I have a moral problem with that; most of the time, whatever we humans touch that is part of Nature, we only ruin. Searching for them, on their own turf, is one thing; making them comfortable around humans is another.

Overall, I have to say that if you have even a fleeting interest in this subject, THE LOCALS is the book to buy. Powell has raised the bar for all future Bigfoot books, and he has set a new standard for a truly scientific approach to the problem.

Refreshingly different
By Mr. James A. Newton
This is the best book I have read about the Bigfoot phenomena since "In the Footsteps of the Russian Snowman". Thom Powell intelligently examines all of the various aspects of phenomena, giving possible credence to every explanation and ariiving at some potential possibilities of his own. What I particularly like was Thom Powells non-arrogant approach - he doesn't demean or mock people but gives each point of view consideration.

Essentially Thom looks at the conflicting approaches of the Bigfoot phenomena. The scientific standpoint which supposes that Bigfoot are real flesh and blood animals, with no particular qualities albeit being especially intelligent in comparison to any other animal. This is in opposition to the other school of thought that attribute Bigfoot to the realms of the supernatural or as being visitors from other worlds (either in time or space).

The book very coherently explores both these possibilities - backing them up with various case studies. I had not heard these case studies before and it was pleasant to read them rather than the usual Ostman, Ape Canyon, Patterson stories. On this point alone the book is very refreshing.

Thom is very respectful in terms of his regard for Native American traditions regarding Bigfoot and suggesting that many Native American beliefs stating that Bigfoot is both real and 'spirit' quite possibly makes the most sense as a way of understanding the phenomena. This is not to say that there is not a rational, 'scientific' explanation of Bigfoot but that science currently does not have the knowledge/ tools/ open-mindedness to understand the phenomenon and that perhaps science needs to address it own attitudes towards the universe.

Interestingly Thom draws many of the same conclusions as the author of 'In the Footsteps of the Russian Snowman'. Firstly that Bigfoot/ Bigfeet can be best explained not as supernatural but as 'super-animals'. Secondly that the best way of achieving contact will be through prolonged habituation in which co-existence is established between humans and bigfeet through gradual trust building. Cases are presented where this has happened and is currently happening.

Thom also explores some aspects of the Bigfoot phenomena such as involvement of other faceless and not no faceless agencies that are keen to play down or outright seek to ridicule the Bigfoot phenomena. Thom again poses some possibilities as to who these people might be and their motivations but avoids the whole intense conspiracy theory route.

Take the time to read this book - I suspect that within a few years it will be as much of a classic as John Greens ' Sasquatch - The Apes Among Us'

Strange book but nicely up to date
By Christopher Curry
I enjoyed reading The Locals - but, I feel that it is not the real investigative book that it pitches itself as. It is well written; however, the investigation is lacking in much meat that would make the book and the investigator credible. For instance, the researcher goes off on some expeditions and finds some evidence which either startles him, he runs out of time or just gives up. The reader (and theorist) is left wondering -- why??? If you are on the tracks of collecting pictures and sounds or having a genuine contact, why would you leave the scene and just explain that you ran out of time or gave up? I dont think that is very good science or investigative research. Other than that, its a nice read. It was good fun to read as I traveled through the Skookum/St Helens area myself.

Review

"This book provides very valuable information on how to improve the usability of visual human-computer interfaces…All of the chapters will interest researchers, practitioners, and students of usability, human-computer interaction, interaction design, graphic design, and other related fields who want to know more about the important and expanding area of visual usability."--Computing Reviews, May 28, 2014 "…an excellent choice for the instructor looking for a textbook detailing the major principles and practices of designing Web site or mobile device interfaces… Particularly effective is the authors’ running critique of the USDA Web site, SuperTracker, for its strengths and weaknesses in visual usability."--Technical Communication, May 2014 "With Tania Schlatter and Deborah Levinson at the helms, both proven experts in their fields, the book ‘visually’ takes you through all the various aspects of user experience design…This book is a pleasant surprise, and a joy to read."--Actual Insights blog, October 26, 2013 "Design veterans Schlatter and Levinson see a lot of digital applications that either look great or are highly functional, but not both, and contend that it does have to be that way. Drawing on heuristics and best practices from a variety of languages and disciplines, they explain how anyone involved in creating digital interfaces can define and defend a rationale for design decisions."--Reference & Research Book News, October 2013

really enjoyed the book
By Charles M. Dalsass
I appreciated the way the book was broken down into simple categories I can remember easily. For example "color", "hierarchy", "type". As a non-designer who needs to understand usability, this helped narrow down the sometimes overwhelming choices we face developing apps. Thanks - great book!

An Excellent and Digestible Read on Visual Design & Usability.
By Mark Wooding
I have found this to be an excellent book and continue to teach my interactive design classes with it today. The book does a great job of creating a colloquial language for designers to use among themselves and the different types of colleagues that they work with (sales, developers, project managers, etc.) on interactive projects.

Visual Usability is a great asset, a good read, and not just for interactive design. It's principles can be applied to various design and multimedia projects and also has good suggestions for managing feedback inside and outside of your project

A design gamechanger
By Vanessa
This book makes a significant contribution to the field. It helps the reader understand what it takes to yield desirable results - attractive and usable products. It introduces visual design in a way that executives and developers both can understand and use to talk about and evaluate design. Because it doesn't get bogged down in roles and buzzwords, it's silo-breaking approach enables the outcomes to be the emphasis. I especially appreciated the examples because they go into detail while the checklist-style guidelines in each chapter help keep the big picture in mind. The checklists are not a recipe - the authors make that clear - but come in handy when trying to communicate with my designer, developer and clients about design issues. Definitely worth the purchase - it warrants a important place on the professional bookshelf.

Inside C#, Second Edition, by Tom Archer, Andrew Whitechapel

For years, developers have wished for a programming language with the power and flexibility of C++ that's also easy to write, read, and maintain like Microsoft "RM" Visual Basic "RM". Visual C# "TM", the hot new Web-enabled programming language from Microsoft, satisfies those wishes. Its object-oriented, programmer-friendly capabilities make it vastly easier to learn and use than older languages such as C++ -- especially for developing Web application. "Inside C#" provides the ideal in-depth look at the architecture and programming elements of Microsoft Visual C#. While other books may concentrate on C# development and runtime environments, this book is devoted to the language itself. It will have an exceptionally long shelf life, since the core C# language will change very little over time, while environments such as Microsoft Visual Studio "RM" may change yearly. This book is perfect for any Visual Basic developer who wants to move up to the next-generation language, and for any Visual C++ developer who wants an eaisier language to use for developing Web-enabled applications for the Internet. It includes tips throughout that highlight differences between Visual Basic, C++, and C# to help select the best language for the job, plus C# sample code both in the text and on an accompanying CD.

Amazon.com Review
Aimed at those with some previous programming experience, Inside C# shows developers the unique strengths, advantages, and tips for coding with C#. This fast-paced and in-depth tutorial will let you use Microsoft's newest programming language on the emerging .NET platform successfully.

The outstanding strength of this text is its in-depth language tutorial on C#, with complete coverage of basic and advanced object-oriented programming techniques. New language features like properties, indexers, and attributes get full coverage, alongside the basics of using classes and inheritance.

The book relies on using Visual Studio 6.0 and the command-line .NET tools for running programs. (Visual Studio.NET, the next version of Visual Studio, was unavailable when the book was written.) First to market with an in-depth language tutorial, the focus of Inside C# is on basic and advanced language features. By viewing generated code (using the ILDASM disassembler tool), the author examines how class design features work under the hood.

The language tutorial digs into features, beginning with a "Hello, World" program and delving into class design features before moving on to more basic features like expressions, operators, and flow control. This sequence makes the book best suited to the experienced developer, since some excellent in-depth material on the most advanced features of C# is presented before the basics of the language. Throughout, you'll learn the newest features of the language, how to use it, and a sense of its personality.

There's also plenty of material on the underlying Microsoft .NET platform, from the basics of the Common Language Runtime (CLR) to assemblies (used to deploy .NET applications), plus getting older COM components to interoperate with the newer .NET standard.

For anyone who's programmed before and wants to learn C# quickly, this in-depth guide anchored with plenty of short, effective examples provides what you need. Inside C# shows off the unique strengths of this new and exciting language and provides a solid introduction to the .NET platform. --Richard Dragan

A great intro to a fun language
By JamesQMurphy
If you're looking for the Kernigan & Ritchie equivalent of C#, then look no further. Tom Archer describes the C# language concisely and accurately, and even makes comparisons to C, C++, and Java, to help those making the transition.
He describes everything: namespaces, classes, inheritance, interfaces, delegates, events, multithreading, and COM interoperability. What's great is that he does everything on the command line -- not a single Windows form, not even a message box. This allows him to focus on the language itself.
He even explains why the design team at Microsoft made certain decisions. For example, why use a garbage-collection system instead of a reference counting system? He describes the thought processes that went on at Microsoft, which is a really nice touch. His style is very easy and conversational, and I had a great time reading it.
There were a few areas which I would have liked him to explain in greater details (threading, for example), but considering that he had to learn the language while writing about it, he did a superb job.

Recommended, but probably shouldn't be your first C# book
By Jim Holloman
The author does a good job of covering the topics. But, you will find no examples of how to design, or write, applications in this book. This book is what I call a "Theory of Operation" book that covers the inner workings of the C# environment. Like the Bible, it is very useful information, perhaps even essential information, but sometimes dull reading -- at least it was for me -- I enjoy more reading about how to use a tool that how a tool is designed and built. But, understanding the tool helps you to understand better how to use it. This book is cearly a book on how C# works -- rather than how to use C# to develop applications.
The book has listings that are in a rather large font with generous vertical spacing. It is about 400 pages, but could probably have been printed on 300-350 pages without any noticeable loss of readability.
This book, like most of the recent books, uses the preferred formatting of code, with the opening brace being on a separate line (I would illustrate, but the Amazon posting program would strip out the formatting). The listings are easy to read, but do take up a generous amount of space. On the other hand, I hate having to try to read C++ that is written like:
for(i=0;i

The Missionaries: God Against the Indians, by Norman Lewis

Norman Lewis’s stunning examination of the disturbing cultural and environmental devastation wrought in the name of religious salvation
Acclaimed travel essayist Norman Lewis spent his life traversing the globe and offering thoughtful commentary on the cultures he visited. In The Missionaries, he turns his critical lens on those missionaries who embed themselves in indigenous cultures to convert the locals to Christianity. What begins with the well-meaning goal of improving the lives of native people, though, often has the opposite effect.

Focusing mainly on tribes in South America, but also in Indochina and the Pacific Islands, Lewis demonstrates how various missionary organizations betray their originating principals and—whether knowingly or not—contribute to the destruction of entire cultures on a scale equivalent to that of genocide.

Exposing Devious Missionaries
By Donald E. Gilliland
Lewis as written both fiction and non-fiction books, but is best-known as a travel writer ("A Dragon Apparent" and "Golden Earth" being two fine books). This book goes beyond a travel account to describe what is described as exploitation and enslavement --- not to mention sheer trickery and brainwashing --- of indigenous tribes in South America by missionaries and "resource-hungry invaders." This is an important book, and one that will light a righteous fire of indignation in those who believe that the Christian missionaries responsible for these outrageous practices are charlatans and should be stopped. Although this book was first published in 1988, there is no doubt that such practices continue today in other parts of the world.

Here is one example of what Lewis found during his trip to one remote village. He writes: "...an NTM missionary entered the Panare village of San Vicente, telling the Indians there to stop all work, get rid of their shotguns and fishing gear, and kill the dogs, as the second coming of Christ was at hand, and only by uninterrupted prayer could they hope to save themselves from celestial fire. The terrified Indians did as instructed, and then they complained of hunger the missionary told them that God would provide for their needs. All they had to do was to abandon their village, congregate on the river bank, bibles under their arms and continue chanting and praying until by God's power the fish would be killed and float to the top. This they did for several days, and were only saved from starvation by the arrival of the National Police."

What can you say? If that doesn't outrage you or make you angry, you have no sense of justice. Lewis not only exposes the missionaries for the devious characters that they are, but he does an outstanding job of describing the villages and villagers, their culture and customs, and how they are threatened by the evangelical hoodlums. Brilliant reporting and written with usual flair.

The Panare Indians of Venezuela
By Nubian Queen
I first got wind of this story over the internet, but it got confusing because I guess they have a tribe of Americans Indians in Colorado with the same name. I left it alone until I brought it up to a friend who was loathe to trust it, so we went in and discovered this was not just an internet Urban Legend, but rather a quote for a book by Norman Lewis, a highly respected travel writer who reported on the group of Christian Missionaries who upon failing to convert the Panare, took the information they had collected about the people and decided they would specially design a New Testament in their language that accused them of crucifying Jesus because "they were wicked". And there's absolutely nothing ancient about this story. This horrible deception was carried out in the mis-1970's. What they had learned about the people was that before they could accept the idea of repentance, they had to be given something to feel guilty about. The text now read at the appropriate places: "The Panare killed Jesus Christ, because they were wicked. Let's kill Jesus Christ, said the Panare... They laid a cross on the ground..." etc. This New Testament continued: "God will burn you all... God will exterminate the Panare by throwing them on the fire... 'Do you want to be roasted in the fire?' asks God. 'Do you have something to pay me with so that I won't roast you in the fire? What is it you're going to pay me?'"

The Christian missionaries succeeded in convincing the Panare Indians that their ancestors had slaughtered Jesus and they were terrified about what was going to be God's wrath upon them. Soon the first Indian woman came forward and said: "I don't want to burn in the big fire. I love Jesus." This event is documented in the book, "The Missionaries: God Against The Indians" by Norman Lewis, Arena 1989, pp.188-192).

Once I found out it was a book, well.....thanks Amazon!

A brave and illuminating account of modern misdeeds
By D.N.W.
A brave, intelligent and socially responsible account of the dastardly work of recent North American missionary organisations, often in cohort with morally corrupt government officials, in their quest to "civilise" or exterminate "less Godly" ancient cultures in remoter regions of the world. The book focuses on South America but has many ramifications for other parts of the world where - frighteningly - such atrocious activities are ongoing today in different forms but essentially with the same bag of tricks, most recently in several tsunami hit countries in 2005. The author calmly exposes the extent to which supposedly Christian organisations are prepared to go, possibly in pursuit of their own very contorted, self serving ideals. A rare fascinating look under the skin of modern missionaries, the book deserves wide coverage.
