ZERO STARS! BEWARE, BEWARE, BEWARE!

The syllabus has recently changed, and there are all or mostly all new works required for the cello exams.

I received books from the prior syllabus which are now pretty much useless and a huge waste of money.

As it is, you will spend a lot of you g this route (ABRSM). I didn't really need old and worthless books on top of that.

Otherwise it is an excellent system. Lots of rules, but that is life if you want to be a success at anything.

About the Author
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, also known as Mahatma Gandhi, was a major political and spiritual leader of India and the Indian Independence movement. Born in 1869 in British India, he was the pioneer of Satyagraha—a philosophy that is concerned with truth and resistance to evil through active, non-violent resistance. He led India to independence from Britain and inspired movements for freedom and civil rights around the world. Gandhi lived a simple life, organizing an ashram that was self sufficient and even made his own clothes. He lived on a vegetarian diet and later on a fruitarian diet. He often underwent long fasts, for both self purification and for protest.He was assassinated in 1948 in New Delhi, India.

A Message for Today

Gandhi's words have never been so pertinent as they are today. This is an anthology of his writings, edited by topic in chronological order. It's an autobiography revealing Gandhi's evolution from a fearful young man, afraid of the dark, to a fearless leader who feared no rebuke by an empire. More than an aesthete in a modern world, Gandhi's complexity is revealed in each passage as he penitently reveals his transformation into selfless service and living simply. His words and actions inspired others to follow without fear of retaliation and could guide today's leaders to a peaceful resolve. The book reads like a primer on non-violence.
Eknath Easwaran's 18 page Preface is worth the price of the 339 page paperbound book.

Gandhi for the Common Man

The Essential Gandhi edited by Louis Fischer provides the reader with a solid introduction into Gandhi's' life, work, and ideas in his own words. It's not a biography in the conventional understanding of the word, but rather a hybrid mix of biographical note and philosophical articulation of the principles that have made Gandhi one of the most beloved historical figures of the last century. Gandhi was not a perfect man as illustrated by the sections on meat eating and his early religious struggles in the first part of the book. That's really important because noted historical figures sometimes take on a pre-godly reverence that blinds us to their flaws. Highly recommended book on Gandhi that just may cause one to step back and consider their own life.

Well organized, inspiring

I've read a total of 3 books about Mahatma Gandhi, all of them stemming from his own writings. This is the best out of those three books.

It is well organized and takes the most crucial parts of his writings and puts them in an order that is coherent and easy to read. The notes by the editor also make it easy for someone who does not know the whole history surrounding Gandhi's plight. She sets the setting and environment with each chapter making sure the reader knows what is going on regardless of their previous knowledge of the situation.

This is why I always suggest this book to anyone who wants to start learning about this amazing man. It is very inspirational, and I have highlighted and reflected on quite a few passages. This is one of my most lent books since everyone hears about and references this man, but very few actually know anything about him.

This is the best book to allow people to be introduced to his ideas and beliefs.

Splashed with bold color designs and action photographs of people―like a woman with outstretched arms in a field of bright yellow flowers―Conger’s exuberant pep talk feels like a warm and fuzzy motivational poster. Many of the colorful pictures include inspirational quotes, such as these attributed to Est�e Lauder: “I never dreamed about success. I worked for it.” Indeed, hard work and grit are the cornerstones of Conger’s message, one often tinged with humor. A photo of a pretty young woman asleep in bed is accompanied by the message, “GET THE F*@% OUT OF BED.” Conger also jokingly compares the Broadway musical Annie to her own “hard knock life.” When Conger was 3, her mother died, and she had a turbulent adolescence. But she didn’t let hardship stop her from reaching her goals. A unique approach to personal growth and success.

Better Human is one of those rare books that is both entertaining and informative. The author, Ronda Conger, is a builder, public speaker and head of an organization that promotes her ideas (www.betterhuman.today. She begins the book with some facts about herself, including that her mother died when she was three years old and that after graduating from high school she went to Canada to begin a working career. The book is divided into 13 chapters each of which essentially supports the idea that positive thinking is the key to a successful life. There are chapters on such topics as the importance of love, gratitude, the value of hard work, the importance of surrounding yourself with positive thinking friends and being in a positive environment, and similar upbeat themes. The book is written in an informal style with lots of colorful inserts. I found it easy to read and finished within one hour. Of course the value of the book is to apply the information to your life. There are a number of books and websites you can access for this purpose and small tests your can take. There also are some catchy expressions such as, “Be a pilot, not a passenger,” and “Life is like an elevator, sometimes you have to stop to let some people off.” I do take issue with one of her conclusions, namely that the best NBA teams are those in which the players touch each other the most. She cites the Los Angeles Lakers, who have been one of the worst teams in the league for the past three years and Kevin Garnett, widely regarded as one of the most disliked players in the league, as her examples.

I rate the book at four stars and not five because Ms. Conger is essentially going over the same ground as other positive attitude books and her approach is too over the top for me to take seriously. At the same time I do think people can benefit from the advice given in this book and I recommend buying it, reading it and applying it to your life.

This book is so inspirational and motivating...it's great hearing the story of someone who started at the bottom and had to work her way up! So many of us share these same types of growing pains, but it takes a lot to overcome them and make the most out of the hard times. Great job, Ronda! I reccomend this book to anyone who needs a little kick in the ass to make themselves a better human, with a better life.

This is an amazing book. I was hooked from start to finish. Each chapter transitioned smoothly! This is the first book I literally couldn't put down. I finished it in one sitting! Great Story

Pauline Gedge is such a talented writer. I've only read two of her books so far, this and The Scroll of Saqqara (a/k/a Mirage), and I'm so impressed with her ability to paint a scene.

This book is so nicely written, it is a joy to read. It was, for its time (it was originally published in 1977) considered historically accurate. It is the story of Hatshepsut, daughter of Thutmose I, of the 18th Egyptian Dynasty, as it was known in the 1970’s. Hatshepsut must have been an extraordinary child; she certainly was an extraordinary adult. When she was a teen, her father proclaimed to the court that she was to be his successor, but instead, she wound up queen and wife to his son (by a concubine) the ineffectual Thutmose II. Thutmose II died young, leaving Hatshepsut with a daughter and Egypt with a son by a concubine, the child Thutmose III.

Hatshepsut, as was typical and acceptable in Egypt, remained in power as regent for the child king, but then later she declared herself king (there was no word in the ancient Egyptian language for “queen” either as the wife of a king or as a female ruler) with the young Thutmose III as her junior co-regent (there were numerous instances of co-regents in Egypt, but they were typically father and son). She is urged to have Thutmose III killed, but she refuses. He gains power; and she knows her time is limited.

However, over the years, we have not only learned a lot about ancient Egypt, but we have also learned how gender-biased earlier theories were. For instance, this book holds with the old belief that Thutmose III hated Hatshepsut and objected to a female overshadowing him, and he couldn't wait to kill her and take over Egypt and destroy her monuments. Hatshepsut actually lived to a ripe old age, by ancient standards, and there is no reason to suspect anything other than a natural death.

More about Hatshepsut for those interested: Her great successes are shown in the book. There are records of her leading a military campaign in Nubia, but most of her reign was peaceful and prosperous. She built or repaired temples across Egypt. She sent explorers to find the long-lost, fabled land of Punt; they returned with amazing riches and reestablished trade for luxury goods to be brought into Egypt. And, of course, she built the most amazing and beautiful sight in all of Egypt: her mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari. She was, all in all, a great ruler and her reign was very successful.

Various Egyptologists, Peter Dorman to name one in particular, have proven that Hatshepsut and Thutmose III coexisted quite peacefully throughout her long reign. Immediately after her death, he completed several monuments she had started, leaving her name and image intact, and leaving images of the two of them together with him as the subordinate. He did usurp some (but not all) of her monuments, but not until about 20 years after her death and his full succession. He was hardly the first or the last pharaoh to do something like that (Ramesses II recut monuments and put his name on just about anything he could). Thutmose III may have simply desired, at the end of his life, to absorb her reign into his, or there may have been a dynastic dispute as to who would succeed him (I always thought his son, Amenhotep II, comes across as an arrogant, incompetent jerk), or there may be other reasons we don't know about.

But all the evidence is that Hatshepsut nurtured the young Thutmose III and supported him; she just remained the primary king while he was junior to her. Why that happened, we don’t know, but she certainly could not have claimed the kingship without support of the court. To later generations, she may simply have been remembered through Thutmose III’s and Amenhotep II’s propaganda as only a regent to the child king. The fact remains that she could have had Thutmose III done away with at any time, and she chose not to.

There were several other female kings before and after Hatshepsut, but she is simply the best known. There even exists a Second Dynasty inscription (reign of Nynetjer, if I remember correctly) that proclaims that it was decided that a woman could become king. Hatshepsut, in fact, was the last (for a while) in a long line of very prominent and powerful women. I’ll just mention one: her great-grandmother, Ahmose-Nefertari, the long-time regent for her son, was still depicted by his side until her death, many years after he reached adulthood. She was deified and worshipped as a goddess for several hundred years.

One thing that was quite unknown when the myth of his woman-hating vengeance was originally created was that Thutmose III built his mortuary temple subsidiary to Hatshepsut’s. It was so badly destroyed, it was until quite recently believed to be a ruined part of her temple. I don't see the logic in him building his temple in that location if he hated her.

Still, this book is beautifully written and a lovely story. It should just be kept in mind that it's fiction and not history. It tells much of the tale of a glorious ruler, although it gives her a sadder end than she deserves.

African Epicness!!!

If you love ancient history, especially the wonderful Egyptians, then this book is just what you need. What it lacks in characterization it makes up for in sheer fun. A fast read, and though it can hardly be faithful to history, Hatshepsut is just as one might imagine her to be: lovely as the dawn yet cold as the night, drawing you into herself yet keeping everyone at a distance. I feel so much more could have been done with her character, as her relationship with Senmut left much wanting, but the book was already long enough since it covered her entire lifetime. The story did get maddening at times and required more than normal suspension of disbelief, but it was absolutely fun, the detail was exquisite, the battle scenes well drawn, and the characters were full of life. Gedge is a wonderful writer. This is my first book of hers, but I will definitely be reading more of her.

Good story, but the digital transformation was a bit rough

I read this book at least 15 years ago, and it still holds up on a second reading. Recent discoveries in Egypt undercut some of the premises, but the overall story is still compelling. Hatshepsut is one of the more interesting figures in Egyptian history, being both female and pharaoh, and Gedge is masterful in taking the bits that we actually do know about her (for example from what still exists on the walls of her temple) and weaving them into a cohesive fictional biography. She puts in a lot of details about ancient Egypt without making them sound like a lesson or a guidebook.

It does look like the the original was scanned and not copy edited. There are many errors, such as periods in the middle of a sentence, using one word when another was clearly intended (most hilariously, Gots for Gods a couple of times.) Still, worth the price.

Highly recommend for people interested in ancient Egypt.
