Willy Claflin became an instant success at the twenty-ninth annual National Storytelling Festival, completing a meteoric rise to fame over about thirty years. He is an accomplished songwriter, guitarist, and singer, as well as a teller of original and traditional tales of audiences coast-to-coast. James Stimson lives in northern California. Rewarding, But Demanding

It has been a long, loong day and now it's storytime. If you need to you can pull out Winnie the Pooh and read an easy, mellow tale. Maybe some Richard Scarry; maybe one of your other favorite illustrated storybooks. But probably not this one, at least not until you've done it a few times and it has become familiar to your little listeners. Here's why.

The author, Willy Claflin, is a professional storyteller and he works best in an oral tradition. Accents, inflection, hands and arms and facial expressions. He knows how to physically sell a story. And maybe most important of all - he knows how to follow an audience and tell whether it is with him or he needs to circle around and drive home a part of the story before moving on. Well, that's what you have to do with this book, a written version of one of his Maynard Moose "Mother Moose" stories.

There is a running joke about double negatives. There is a big part devoted to the "soporific" effect of extended planning discussions. There is a lot of adult humor worked in to the story. None of this is beyond a little listener, but you have to make sure that listener gets it before moving on. So you have to repeat, elaborate, explain - in short, tell - the story, not just read it. You have funny mixed-up words, cockeyed story telling, odd characters, a silly plot, and a certain sense of off kilter anarchy. Kids love that, especially if it's coming from Mom or Dad. You have to commit to reading this book, and then I'd bet dollars to donuts you start doing it in a funny voice. Doesn't that sound like a nice treat for every now and then?

An added bonus is that the drawings are offbeat, angular, out of proportion and stylized with a real sense of humor and fun. Some of the art is practically frameable, which is a huge step up from the often just cute or serviceable illustrations in some books. This seems like the kind of book that encourages you to draw the listener in to the pictures and to point out funny bits. What an appealing extra.

So, a solid, unique and pretty sophisticated choice for adventurous readers and listeners.

An absurd delight

"Far Away in the Northern Piney Woods, there lives a storyteller named Maynard Moose..." begins The Bully Goat Grim, the third in a comical new series of fractured fairy tales by storyteller and author Willy Claflin. Like its predecessors (The Uglified Ducky and Rapunzel and the Seven Dwarfs), this very funny parody of the Billy Goats Gruff is based on an engaging premise, that of being told in the words of a certain moose named Maynard.

The as-told-to mechanism carries the entire book beautifully, and allows Claflin to employ the sort of tone and language usually reserved for in-person storytelling. Maynard the narrator talks in a folksy sort of moose-speak, complete with lisp and creative grammar. Read aloud, the words amble affably along, lending themselves perfectly to classroom and library story times. (There are distinct echoes of that other fictional storyteller, Uncle Remus.)

Claflin's version turns the familiar story on its head, making the billy goat the bad guy and creating a "fambly" of three trolls who live under a bridge and spend their free time bringing home useless objects from the dump. Children will laugh at the mommy troll with three heads, chant along with the addictive refrain ("Beware, beware, the Bully Goat Grim! / Nobody better not mess with him!"), and cheer on the baby troll who saves the day by knowing a double negative when she hears one.

Along with this broad humor that will appeal to children of all ages, there is also a more sophisticated, tongue-in-cheek element. Here is how Maynard describes the Bully Goat Grim: "He was twice more larger than normal, having bulked up in his youth on wild tuberoot, which as you may understand, contains a dabundance of natural steroids." Adults will smirk.

With a satisfying ending and glossy, appealing cartoon-inspired illustrations, Maynard Moose's latest is an absurd delight that will have kids and adults giggling more every time they read it. Be careful--after several readings you might find yourself talking like Maynard Moose himself, and saying things like, "Ok, kids, it's time to go get cleanified." But maybe that's not such a bad thing.

As an added bonus, the book comes with a CD of the author reading the story in his inimitably hilarious storyteller's voice.

A Quirky Twist On A Beloved Fairy Tale

This was an awesomely quirky and fun new take on the Billy Goat's Gruff! I loved this story so much more than the original because it was so much more fun to read! I can't wait to read more fractured fairytales by this amazingly talented author!

The illustrations were gorgeous and darkly amusing especially for adults! I can't imagine anyone not liking this original and hilarious version of this clasic story! The nuances of the story will be lost on younger readers but that just lends an amazing depth to the story for older and more advanced readers and gives it an amazing amount of reread ability for years to come for young readers. The illustrations though dark and clearly twisted they are cute enough to entrall younger readers without frightening them :)

The image shows two T4 bacteriophage viruses attaching to, and injecting DNA into, a bacterium. Like alien invaders, they are going to consume the contents of the bacterial cell, using the materials to make hundreds of copies of themselves, finally rupturing open the cell wall of the now dead bacterium, liberating the hundreds of offspring to attack more bacteria. Using bacteriophages (bacteriophage therapy) gets around the problems of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. And, since a given bacteriophage will target and kill only one specific strain of bacterium, the normal bacterial flora will not be disturbed, thus preventing side effects such as diarrhea and vaginal yeast infections.

About the Author
Jacquelyn� Black received her B.A., B.S., M.S. from the University of Chicago and her Ph.D. from Catholic University of America. She has been teaching microbiology to undergraduates since 1970. She is a member of the American Society for Microbiology, and she has received grants for conducting teacher-training programs.

In May 0f 2000, the Washington Academy of Sciences gave Jackie the Leo Schubert Award for Excellence in Teaching of Science in College. This award is given for exceptional teaching and writing in the field of microbiology, with particular emphasis on the teaching o undergraduate students.

In addition to her extensive teaching experience, Dr. Black has engaged in fieldwork and studies throughout the globe. Her travels have taken her from the interior of Iceland to Belgium, Germany, Lappland, China, South America, Portugal, the barrier reef of Belize, and most recently to over a dozen universities in Russia.

Dr. Black describes herself as an "incorrigible snoop," interested in all the various aspects and applications of microbiology. this natural curiosity, coupled with her classroom and laboratory experience, makes her uniquely qualified to author an introductory microbiology textbook. This book conveys her sense of excitement for microbiology and offers the most current information on developments and applications within this field.

Excellent text for microbiology.

Jacqueline Black truly has a way with with words. She has a very readable textbook. I have chosen this book for my Microbiology class. my students are primarily nursing students. The "extra" information she has included in the text adds a spark of reality to the text.

Best Intro Microbio Text on the Market

This book is the best intro microbiology textbook I've seen. The author writes in a very straigtforward, no nonsense, yet detailed fashion and explains concepts with a perfect blend of precision and simpicity that other books lack. The book has nice photos and illustrations to support the great writing.

A great book for a 200- level course

I used this book in the 200-level microbiology course I taught last year and will use it again this year. It has wonderful figures and great instructor resources. There are a few errors in the text, for example the glossary gives the definition of an auxotroph to be that of an autotroph, and the autotroph definition is that of the auxotroph. This confused my students.

It's a great book for a nursing/ non-majors microbiology course. I would stick with Brock's Biology of Microorganisms for a Biology Majors course.

--> Addition to this review (Dec. 2010), it's filled with errors, as is the instructors guides that are online for this text. It makes it difficult to teach something if the book is incorrect. For example, look up autotroph and auxotroph in the glossary. The definitions are backwards. This is just one example of many errors!!

About the Author

Steven T. Fleming, PhD, is an associate professor in the College of Public Health at the University of Kentucky, with appointments in the departments of epidemiology and health management and policy. Professor Fleming has master s degrees in public administration (University of Hartford) and applied economics (University of Michigan). He also earned a PhD in health services organization and policy from the University of Michigan. He teaches introductory epidemiology to nearly 100 students each year from a number of different disciplines, and he teaches managerial epidemiology to advanced practice nursing students

I gave this book two stars because the case studies are an interesting way to apply the information; however, the reading seems excessively complicated and dry. Clearly the author is a fan of jargon, because that is precisely the method in which this is written. I would expect there to be moments of complication, but there are surprisingly few moments of transparency. It contains interesting information, but is presented in the most over-elaborate way.

Love Living like a Rock Star

LOVE this book! Monica Bossinger's, "The Life and Luck of a Bachelorista," is a must read for women of the world. It's an insightful, witty look at how fulfilling and empowering single life can be for modern women. The illustrations fit the style of the book perfectly and are a delight to see as you eagerly read each chapter to get to the next! You won't be able to put this book down.

Monica's stories are infused with humor and insight from her personal experience, as well as her thoughts about her single and married friends' situations. It makes you feel confident about living the life you want without regrets - and without guilt for not conforming to out-dated social norms. Not bad, but hardly as impartial as the author claims

The author of this book says, not once but repeatedly, that this is not a book recommending a voting system, but rather to help one decide what sort of voting system to adopt. Too bad that this is not really so. The author is clearly skeptical of the claims put forth by advocates of the Single Transferable Vote, but his comments go well beyond skepticism to the level of condemnation. He does recognize one good thing about STV, that it protects minorities, but there are whole chapters devoted to knocking down STV (including one called "How to do better than STV"!) Meanwhile, he minimizes or omits the arguments adduced by those pointing out the problems in other systems, such as the Borda Count, which has some major flaws, but only a paragraph in the whole book to address these flaws.

I would say that there is much that is useful in this book, though it has to be read with the knowledge that Dummett simply does not like STV. A couple of years ago, I reviewed "Electoral Systems: A Comparative Introduction," by David M. Farrell. This would certainly be a better book to learn about voting systems with a more impartial approach, and I would advise readers to look at Farrell's book in preference to this one, though if you allow for its biases, this is not a bad book.

It REALLY IS Sweet!

I was not aware that this was a lesbian romance when I started reading the book so this was a first for me in this genre. I jumped in with an open mind; determined to enjoy the book in the spirit of its intended audience. I was glad I did. The dialogue in How Sweet It Is is genuinely funny and sweet, the characters are well-written. There are grammatical errors, which distracted me from the story at times. I can’t help it – it’s just a peeve for me that I can’t overlook. I’m hoping the final publication will be cleaned up.

Molly O’Brien is a sweetheart. Everyone in the town of Applewood, Illinois, thinks so. After losing the love of her life four years prior in a plane crash, Molly thinks she’s ready to start dating once again. When Jordan Tuscana, younger sister of her lost love, returns to town, Molly finds herself interested in a way she isn’t prepared for.

It’s beautifully written. I couldn’t help but fall in love with the main characters Molly and Jordan. Both have to deal with the loss of Cassie in their own way. I really enjoyed how their relationship develops and how well written the realization and acceptance of the situation affects Molly and Jordan individually. The interaction between the two main characters was fun and engaging. I actually laughed out loud at some of their dialogue. I love a book that actually brings forth emotions. If I can laugh and cry while reading a book, it’s a win for me. I think both Molly and Jordan learn to be comfortable with the fact that they can build a relationship in spite of their shared loss.

I don’t think that this genre will become something I seek out, but I also won’t avoid it. It was a sweet story, and I enjoyed and recommend reading it.

A GENUINE AND WITTY ROMANCE

This is based on the ebook version purchased from the publisher today. As you can tell I really enjoyed it since I bought and read this book all in one day. I think it was one of the better lesbian romances I've read all year. I genuinely enjoyed the banter between the two leads. I felt the connection between them as friends and was rooting for them the whole way. Brayden did a good job of portraying the inner feelings and emotions of both leads; I felt emotionally connected to both characters. I'm embarrassed to say I teared up when Jordan truly felt that giving up what she wanted would be better for everyone else in her life. But, the book itself was not emotionally heavy. The author did a good job of balancing the heavier emotions with a lighthearted feel we get from the two leads interacting with each other and with the secondary characters.

This storyline could very easily have turned dark and melodramatic and thankfully the author understands how NOT to do that. Even during emotionally uncertain moments Brayden knows how to pull it back and make it real. I especially liked the part where Jordan breaks the tension by making a joke about Jane Austen and being at high tea. Very clever.

I think what I appreciated most about the book was how real the characters felt. Molly's need to please everyone and not wrecking the status quo; Jordan trying to let go of adolescent insecurities and attempting to move into adulthood as gracefully as possible; her parents inability to see her as an adult for most of the book but coming through for their kid when it counts most; the way the town pulls together to help one of it's own: they're all quirky and wonderful in their own way and I was a little sad to have come to the end of the book.

How sweet indeed!

This book will definitely cause the need for an insulin shot after reading it! Brayden's story takes you through a wide range of emotions, where you're dancing a happy dance one moment, wiping tears the next, and before you can get back to dancing, you're yelling at characters. But don't worry, you'll be smiling and dancing again before it ends.

The relationship between Molly and Jordan is taboo. While Brayden doesn't let you forget that, she writes about these two in a way that really makes you not care that the relationship should be "forbidden". Its easy to root for them getting together, and you'll feel their pain in them being separated. Anyone with "interesting" family dynamics can easily relate to this story.

Warning: This book will make you crave all sorts of delicious treats. Cinnamon Buns, Blueberry Muffins, and Molly Dollys...

The book opens with an overview of Java's stream capabilities. In a notable chapter, the author thoroughly explicates Java's support for encryption, including hashing, the Data Encryption Standard (DES) algorithm, and ciphers.

The last portion of the book explains object serialization, which allows Java objects to save and restore their state, plus it includes sections on Java's support for data compression (and ZIP files) and multilingual Unicode character sets. (Java is prepared to handle virtually any of the world's languages with its reader and writer classes.) Finally, the author shows how you can format output in Java using its support for width and numeric precision APIs.

In all, Elliotte makes a good case that Java streams are a flexible and powerful part of the language, and certainly not a limitation. --Richard Dragan

'If I had to decide the best technical book ever read by me, this would be a real candidate. In my opinion a good programming book should limit itself to covering some well-defined part of its (usually) exhaustive topic. It should be easy to read with well-chose and short code-samples, especially for the critical parts and optionally, the code should grow throughout the chapters and evolve to full working programs at the end. This title fulfils it all... There aren't many illustrations throughout, but the reader will not miss them. The 'in-depth-notes' at strategic places are interesting and reveals a deep knowledge of the subject. About the Author

Elliotte Rusty Harold is originally from New Orleans to which he returns periodically in search of a decent bowl of gumbo. However, he currently resides in the University Town Center neighborhood of Irvine with his wife Beth, dog Shayna, and cats Charm (named after the quark) and Marjorie (named after his mother-in-law). He's an adjunct professor of computer science at Polytechnic University where he teaches Java, XML, and object oriented programming. He's a frequent speaker at industry conferences including Software Development, Dr. Dobb's Architecure & Design World, SD Best Practices, Extreme Markup Languages, and too many user groups to count. His open source projects include the XOM Library for processing XML with Java and the Amateur media player.

Great 2nd edition of a comprehensive book on Java I/O

The first edition of Java I/O is now seven years old, and it is definitely time for a second edition considering all that has transpired. Note that the second edition was released in May 2006, so all reviews older than that are referring to the first edition. In this second edition there are basically eight entirely new chapters added to the original seventeen. It is probably worth the price of an upgrade especially if you are interested in Java I/O as it pertains to devices. I review this second edition in the context of comparing it to the first edition.

Chapters 1 through 5 are virtually the same.
Chapter six, "Filter Streams", has had one section - Print Streams - removed and had another section on the ProgressMonitorInputStream class added. ProgressMonitorInputStream is a unique filter stream hiding in the javax.swing package that displays progress bars that indicate how much of a stream has been read and how much remains to be read, and this book shows how to use it when reading unusually large files. The section on Print Streams that was removed from chapter six now has an entire chapter dedicated to it. This is because, starting in Java 5, the familiar PrintStream class has become a lot more powerful and interesting. Besides basic console output, it now provides extensive capabilities for formatting numbers and dates in a straightforward and easy fashion.

The chapters on data streams, streams in memory, and compressing streams are virtually unchanged from the first edition. However, the "Jar Files" section from the "compressing streams" chapter has been removed and now has an entire chapter dedicated to it. In this chapter, among other topics, the author explains the Pack200 compression format and evangelizes the increasingly popular technique of hiding noncode resources like images and data files inside JAR files. The two chapters on cryptographic streams and object serialization are basically the same as before, except that one section has been added on the JavaDoc in the serialization chapter.

The next section of the book, on New I/O, is completely new material and is comprised of three chapters. The java.nio packages provide nonblocking and memory-mapped I/O, and chapters 14 through 16 cover these powerful new abilities in depth. The new I/O model is based on channels and buffers instead of streams. This model doesn't replace traditional stream-based I/O for many uses. However, it is significantly faster in one important use case: servers that process many simultaneous clients.

The next two sections of the book, "The File System" and "Text", pretty much mimic chapters 12 through 16 of the first edition.

The final section of the book, "Devices", has almost completely new material. Some of the most exciting developments since the first edition have occurred in the world of small devices,in both peripherals such as GPS receivers that connect to a host computer and devices such as Palm Pilots that are themselves increasingly powerful computers. Treatment of both of these has been dramatically expanded in this edition. For those readers working with serial and parallel port devices, the Java Communications API chapter has been upgraded to version 3.0. However, in 2006 more and more devices use faster USB ports instead. Consequently, Chapter 23 covers the new Java USB API in depth. For smaller devices that can't quite run full Java but need to perform I/O nonetheless, J2ME offers the Generic Connection Framework (GCF). Chapter 24 covers this alternative to the traditional I/O framework. Finally, Chapter 25 uses the GCF to communicate over one of the newest I/O buses, the Bluetooth API used for wireless communications with a variety of peripherals.

I was very pleased with the first edition of this book, and I have an even higher recommendation for this second edition. There are clear descriptions of how to use the Java I/O classes as well as well-commented code examples for everything. However, if you are just recently coming from a C or C++ programming perspective, the Java I/O model is so different that it will likely be a shock no matter how good the teacher is, and Mr. Harold is an excellent one. I notice that Amazon does not show the table of contents, so I do that here:

An excellent discussion of a commonly misunderstood subject

For many programmers who started off using the command line as their primary I/O source, the Java system is a bit unusual. The simple, straightforward style of C is completely different than the various classes in Java. After reading through this book and delving into a few examples, Java's I/O classes became much clearer. The class structure makes a lot of sense, separating formatting from actual reading and writing, and allows for a great deal of flexibility. Although the author maligns the old command line style, much of the java.io package is based on streams and pipes from the Unix paradigm. This somewhat flippant disregard for the command line is my only major beef with the book. Otherwise, I found it to be very readable and handled all of the topics well.

Well-written, comprehensive treatment of the subject

This is an excellent book.
After jumping around and reading about a third of it, I was already recommending to some of the newer Java programmers around me to pick it up and get a solid understanding of proper I/O use in Java. I very much recommend this as any Java programmer's second book. Right after learning the language itself, this book should be read followed closely by other O'Reilly titles such as Java Threads and Java Network Programming. Those three books will give an in-depth understanding of the core Java API's for any new Java programmer, and will be of use to you no matter how you are using Java.
Even after three years as a Java developer, I have learned from this book. The author often presents algorithms in clear steps and follows those clear steps with a correct implementation. Because of this clear presentation, the chapter on compression left me for the first time with an understanding of not only how to use the java.util.zip.* classes but how they work. What I learned there in one reading is immediately applicable to what I am working on now. The sections on Files is full of tips on how to use them in a cross platform fashion. Every new Java programmer needs to read that chapter before their applications actually get used.
I was also impressed that several I/O classes missing in the standard library which I have only recently developed myself were presented as well. The StreamCopier and the TeeOutputStream are extremely useful classes that should be incorporated in some fashion into the base API. I wish I had them a long time ago. (A hint: you can also use the TeeOutputStream as a 'Traitor' to peek at your I/O while your program is running and without affecting its execution.) If I have any complaint about this book, it is that there are not more of these types of utilities presented for use by the advanced Java programmer. However, I haven't finished the book yet, so they may still be hidden there.
