Writer's Beware...

Writer's Market is THE reference guide I recommend to new writers who are looking to publish via a traditional path, but the 2017 edition has me rethinking that recommendation. I used the guide a couple of weeks ago to help an author find a potential publisher for his current project, and in reviewing ones that looked promising I came across R.C. Linnel Publishing (p.288). The Problem? They're not a traditional publisher, they're a vanity press which charges authors for editing and publishing ([...]). This may seem nitpicky, and it is possible that the company changed their model after being listed since after all some companies no longer publish the genres the guide says they do, and some now require agents where their listings say they don't BUT it could also be a sign the the quality control is slipping in terms of vetting the publishers included.

A must have book!

This book is a gold mine of information for established writers as well as for those just getting started. I've been a travel writer and photographer for many years and though I knew my markets pretty well. While skimming through this book, I found potential markets in places I would have never thought to look. Who would think that an oil refinery magazine in Western Texas would be interested in my story about desert wildflowers? So many of these trade and specialty magazines like to include interesting stories about their general area. While such stories have nothing to do directly with their business, these stories can be valuable recruiting tools, of interest to investors, or used in annual reports. So, don't be too narrow in your focus. Think outside the box and look in areas you haven't looked before. This little discovery has opened new markets that have increased my income significantly. I highly recommend this book.

Huge Reference

The book is a good place to start for someone like myself that wants to make a career change into writing. I have found it helpful but massive in the amount of information it contains.

I truly had no idea of the size of the writers market until I got this book. That being said it is not the end all and be reference all for potential income streams in writing. After spending a couple of days going through it I found that it lacked information on some of the areas that I am targeting my writing toward. However, it did give me the ways and the encouragement to locate those areas.

A good choice for the new writer.

A Good Book for Beginners

If you are looking for an elementary introduction to phonetics that is fairly narrow in scope, this book may appeal to you. The book treats only English speech sounds and is somewhat oriented to students of speech pathology. On the other hand, the extensive exercises at the ends of the chapters are useful in mastering a subset of the International Phonetic Alphabet. I can now understand many of the pronunciation annotations in Wikipedia, a new skill that I value. Also, the remarkably specialized vocabulary of this field ("unvoiced bilabial fricative," for example) is now accessible.

Lettow-Vorbeck was a man who participated in the China Relief expedition, the native uprisings in German Southwest Africa and, of course, the extended campaign in German East Africa where he commanded the Schutztruppe, a mixed force of German and native forces.

The preliminary material for the book is very worth reading-particularly Dr. Dohrenwend's Introduction as it gives a lot of information on the German military system. The illustrations are copied from the original German edition. The two illustrations on the back cover are from a private collection of pictures of East African Askaris (native German soldiers).

The book is printed on acid free paper and is Smythe sewn. A quality presentation and perfect volume for the library of those interested in African studies.

Wonderful story of an amazing history.

Riling Enterprises has done us a great service by reprinting (in such a clean and beautiful format) the General's auto-biography.
While most reprints are difficult to read almost xerox copied, this is a professionally printed and hard cover bound book, with exceptional photos added. And a lovely dust jacket!
The volume is a good read, and the African experiences even had me rooting (almost) for the Germans! His story of 1930s Germany and the rise of Hitler is very interesting, and gives a good perspective on that time.

THE Classic Cello Etude Book

This is the classic technique and etude book for cellists. From the very easy to the quite difficult, this study book gives plenty to work on in technique, fingering, bowing, and many other aspects of cello playing. Unlike many etude books, "the Schroeder," as it was (fondly & often unfondly, due to the level of difficulty!) called, will not take the student a short way then run out, leaving the cellist to go out and purchase yet another etude book. The student could easily spend a year or two with this book, and on indefinitely as a way to "keep on one's toes."

In a way, it's ironic that I find myself providing a review for this book, as the exercises were often grueling (to me) and elicited many a groan. Not a lesson passed that my teacher did not assign several of these exercises in addition to whatever else I might be working on. (In fact, there was so much material to work on again and again that I never went on to Vol. 2 -- though it could have been due to changing teachers when I left for college to pursue my cello degree.)

At any rate, the Schroeder offers a wealth of material to sharpen technique and facility, and for that I highly recommend it. It will put you through your paces!

Better late than never

I began learning cello as an adult about 10 years ago, and my progress has been very slow due to a number of factors, primarily lousy practice habits. The exercises in this book, which start at a very basic level and progress rapidly, would have been a great help and I really wish I had been working with this from the beginning. Better late than never, though.

I am a beginning cellist and find this book one of the best so far! Each exerise is a progression to the next in techniques...a must for any cello student. High recommended, especially if you do not have a full-time instructor to guide you.
