Rochman, an expatriate South African, selected these 10 stories by eight of her compatriots. As she points out in the introduction, the stories are grim; readers unprepared to confront the harsh realities of apartheid may well be shocked. The book opens with the brutal "Crackling Day" by Peter Abrahams, told by a black boy who gets a beating for having defended himself against a violent group of white schoolboys. Following that is "The Old Chief Mshlanga" by Doris Lessing, which is more subdued, but just as upsetting. Nadine Gordimer is represented by "Country Lovers" and "A Chip of Glass Ruby." Other stories describe a young black boy's father being taken away by police, the unlikely camaraderie between a white soldier and a black guerrilla, the silence of a rainy night in a black township after a firebombing. These thought-provoking tales present a stunning indictment of apartheid, although some contain powerful sexual references that may not be suitable to younger members of the target age group. Eight authors are represented by ten stories; the writers are black and white and range from the much-anthologized Doris Lessing, Nadine Gordimer, and Mark Mathabane to less-familiar names like Dan Jacobson and Ernest Havemann. Somehow Tenderness Survives is a worthy companion for other collections such as A Land Apart (Penguin, 1987), edited by Andre Brink, African Short Stories (Heinemann, 1985), edited by Chinua Achebe, and The Penguin Book of Southern African Stories (1986), edited by Stephen Gray. Although for the most part the stories in this latest collection are simple, even understated, in style, they are subtle. Reading this anthology may help high-school students to grasp the complex idea of how the most private corners of life are affected by systematic restriction and injustice. Life of Apartheid

This collection of short stories tells about the pain of living under the system of apartheid, from all points of view. Some of these stories are about black people who have to live as inferiors for their entire lives, while others are about white people who realize what kind of system this really is. No matter what side the speaker of the story is on, all of the stories tell of realization and pain and they exhibit over and over again what a bad way to live apartheid was.

I liked that each story was slightly different--some were about the rich, others about the poor, and every author had a different theme and a different purpose. I didn't feel like I was reading the same thing over and over. I tend to not like short stories, though, because they don't have the time to develop the characters to the extent I'd like. I'm always left wondering what happened to the characters after each story ends.

I was forced to read this book when I was in 6th grade; a few of the stories were selected by our reading teacher, and we were to read and comment on them. Given that it was a school assignment, I was not looking forward to it. However, I ended up devouring the entire book that same night. Growing up in a suburban middle-class white neighborhood meant I had never encountered the issues of apartheid and racism that the characters in this novel endured. Needless to say, I cried while reading the majority of those stories. It really opened my eyes to a world very different from my own, where it wasn't safe to be black in a country that was predominantly black. For the last four years, I taught special education in a junior high and a high school, and I used at least one of these stories each year to give my students a different perspective, and to help teach empathy. I highly recommend this book.

I first read this book when I was about 12 years old. I didn't understand it all at the time. It led to asking many questions and reading history, trying to find some answers. A powerful book.

Great overview of relative materials! Highly recommended to anyone who is planning on taking the patent bar exam. It covers the new AIA related material and even injects comments about the updates in the meat of the MPEP materials.

major topics of women's liberation

The book has a wide remit. It aspires to cover many of the major topics within women's and gender studies in the US. It reprints several recent research papers that the editors/authors consider significant. The phrase women's liberation figures prominently in several chapters. We see that the current status of women in the US is vastly freer than in recent decades, triggered in large part by the social upheavals of the 1960s.

One topic is the beauty ideal. This is still dominated in the media by the perceptions and stereotypes of a slender white female. Only gradually are other ethnicities appearing as alternate ideals. Another related topic is the problem of obesity and being overweight. Contrasting views are aired. Some feminists argue that there should be greater acceptance of size variation, instead of one ideal. The counterargument proposed is largely by health professionals, who point out that obesity triggers many deleterious effects, like increased risk of diabetes and heart attack and cancer. There is an irony that should be apparent to the reader. The esthetic acceptance of different body weights as a function of ethnicity is commendable from the viewpoint of a multiethnic society. But this very acceptance can lead to an acceptance of greater morbidity and mortality for some ethnic groups. The book does not attempt to resolve this, but to bring it to the forefront of the reader's attention.

Another topic is the persistent wage gap between men and women. Over decades, progress has been glacial in narrowing the gap. Some historical observations are proferred. But there is no expectation of any major change in the status quo.

In the description it said there was slight cover damage. That would have been acceptable, but the book is also folded and damaged on the inside. The pages have folds that run through the entire book. Some pages also have small tears on the edges. I paid 60$ for my copy, and it was definitely not worth that much with all of the damage.

Eye Candy for the Creative Mind

“ Incredibly beautiful” is the first thing in my mind and out of the mouths of my staff last Friday afternoon when the book arrived at the office. And not just a pretty cover. One of the most graphically enjoyable business books I’ve read in a while.
Rowan does a really good (and fascinating) job of patterning the renaissance and moving that pattern forward as the Four Lenses framework. The business cases are inspiring and the Four Lenses are nice divergence tools for insight pollination.
My assessment is that Rowan wrote this book for two reasons. One he shares, the other becomes immediately obvious to the reader, but is not shared overtly. Rowan states “My goal in writing this book was to somewhat demystify the front end of innovation” and he does that elegantly by articulating four critical habits of thought, which he calls the “Four Lenses”. First, by “noticing” them in the patterns of the famous renaissance creators, then by validating that pattern with an inspiring series of modern business cases.

He makes a statement that describes a frustration we both hold deeply: “What most large companies are missing is a systematic methodology and an organized process for generating, capturing, sharing and using powerful insights at the very front end of their innovation efforts”

Rowan and I agree. Diverse learning is the key. Developing polymathic abilities is possible. It’s possible to create institutional support for and pressures to become “renaissance people.” Doing so would serve our overall global culture as well as our organizational success. The thinking methods and tools he presents are inspired by the four lenses he has articulated, and these lenses become powerful viewpoints for creating additional insight generation tools that are workable in any organizational setting. The book is incredibly stimulating and energizing. And the unstated reason he wrote the book? He obviously wanted to create something beautiful. Together with his wife Zulma and their creative partners, he’s done exactly that.

Looking through the Four Lenses of Innovation helps

Rowan sets about to unpack the creative process a little more through his Four Lense framework. Ideas are built within our minds. We collect many thoughts that initially may be random, but as these connect they become the kernel of a new idea. Rowan defines an idea as a new pattern of thoughts.

The book is about exploring and explaining the thought processes that lead to new ideas by mapping them through these four lenses back in history, from ancient times, through the Renaissance period, telling some stories of Edison, Einstein and bringing us more up to date with a host of contemporary ones of Steve Jobs, Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk to bring us up too today in this exploration journey of how big ideas are actually built.

He is embarking to take us on a journey, a quest to discover the creative genius that is inside us all.

It is a book I certainly recommend. It took me on my personal journey. It did its job. It challenged my thinking patterns. It broke some, it reinforced others. It helped describe the creative journey we all need to travel, which can be full of surprises and we do need to stay open to rethink everything.
