About the Author

Dr. V. Sridhar obtained his B.E. from University of Mysore in Electronics and Communication Engineering, M.E. (Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering) from Jadavpur�University, Calcutta and Ph.D from Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi. He carried out his Post Doctoral Research at Dept. of Electrical and Electronics, University Tenaga Nasional, Malaysia. Dr. Sridhar has been working as a Principal of PES College of Engineering for last 4 years and has been associated with this Institute since 1980, from beginning of his career. His fields of interest include VLSI Design, Digital Signal Processing, Bio-medical Engineering & Instrumentation and Cognitive studies, Computer and Mobile communications. He was also the Registrar (Evaluation) at Visweswaraya Technological University, Belgaum. He has presented and published many papers in National and International peer-reviewed journals and conferences. He has also been a guiding force for M.Sc and Ph.D students. He is instrumental in establishing a CAD Center for VLSI Design as Center of Excellence at the Institution. He is a life member of IEEE (M), IETE (F), ISTE (M), and BMSI (M) and has participated in various national and international conferences.

Dr. H.S. Sheshadri completed his B.E. in Electronics and Communication Engineering from University of Mysore, M.E. in Applied Electronics from Bharathiar University, Coimbatore and Ph.D from Anna University, Chennai. This translation is too awkward for most readers

Before you dedicate many hours to reading this masterpiece, you must be sure you select the appropriate translation for your reading style. The Pevear translation - although highly acclaimed - may make it difficult for most readers to grasp the essence of this beautiful story, and therefore I would almost always recommend the McDuff version ahead of the Pevear.

The Brothers Karamazov presents the same challenge for every English translator; namely, Dostoevsky took pride in creating distinct voices and syntax for each of his characters, and most translations have sacrificed the syntax and voicing to make it more readable - in the process losing much of the tone of each character. Pevear's translation is known for being the truest to the original, as it replicates the syntax with an almost academic precision. However, in being so true to the syntax and voicing, Pevear leaves sentence structures that are so unfamiliar-sounding to the native English speaker as to be disruptive. Many times as I read this translation I found myself jolted out of the flow of reading because the phrasing felt so awkward. As an example of a difficult sentence:

Pevear: "These occasions were almost morbid: most depraved, and, in his sensuality, often as cruel as a wicked insect, Fyodor Pavlovich at times suddenly felt in himself, in his drunken moments, a spiritual fear, a moral shock, that almost, so to speak, resounded physically in his soul." Compare that to

McDuff "These were instances that almost seemed to involve some morbid condition: most depraved, and in his voluptuous lust often brutal, like an evil insect, Fyodor Pavlovich would on occasion suddenly experience within himself, in his drunken moments, a sense of spiritual terror and moral concussion that echoed almost physically, as it were, within his soul".

This is a good example of the tradeoffs each translator makes. Generally: Pevear's is tight, precise, uses simple language and is truest to the original and punchy sentence structure. It requires a high tolerance for odd syntax. McDuff's uses a broader vocabulary (e.g. "moral concussion"), but his flow/ear is much more natural to most English speakers. The sacrifice is that McDuff uses probably 5%-10% more words, but I personally believe these additions make it far more readable. It is still generally true to the sentence structure, but by taking a quarter step away from the purist version, he sheds much more light on the underlying text than Pevear.

Based on research, other reviewers and my own experience: if you are familiar with Russian, Pevear is for you. If you value precision, read for words instead of flow, or are better able to tolerate difficult phrasing than difficult vocabulary, then Pevear is for you. If you are more comfortable with a wider repertoire of words, and typically read with a background sense of the "flow" of each sentence, I believe McDuff will be far more readable while maintaining all the essence of the original work.

No Novel Will Ever Change You As Profoundly for the Better

I do not know what my review can add to the Brothers Karamazov, but I will put in a few of my words. I have now read this book six times through and every time I am simply amazed at the complexity of vision that Dostoevsky brought to the page. My copy of the book is littered with page numbers written in the margins that connect the dots between all of the recurring scenes, ideas, images, phrases, and philosophies. It has taken years of sustained thought to be able to draw all of these connections, which makes it somewhat unbelievable that Dostoevsky was able to write it in the time frame that he did. Because of this, though, I have found this translation to be the only reasonable choice for the serious student. Many earlier translations ironed out potentially awkward phrasings, and thereby destroyed the parallelism that was being masterfully established.

I have shed so many tears on the pages of my copy of this book that I am surprised it is still holding up as well as it is. There is a sensitivity and beauty to this text that I have never been able to find anywhere else, even in other works by Dostoevsky. It is, quite simply, the most masterful examination of agape (active love), faith, and justice, and redemption that I have ever encountered in my life, in philosophy, history, literature, film, or otherwise. There are no words to offer that can capture how profoundly this book has changed me for the better.

McDuff more colorful than Pevear

If you're going to tackle a big foreign book, I think it's critical to have a colorful, engaging translation. If it's too dry, the book will likely prove too much (at least to me).

An example of McDuff's translation: when he translates how a poor couple has been putting aside money for savings he says, "They had a pathetic little nest egg." There's a sense of empathy, irony and depth to that voice. In Pevear the same passage as I recall is something like "They had a small savings." The narrative voice McDuff brings out is just richer.

I like some of the Pevear translations: Crime and Punishment was good, and The Double, and Notes from the Underground. I re-read just about the whole repetoire of Dostoevsky's novels every 2-3 years, and I just couldn't get through the drier Pevear translation for Karamazov.

Filled with so much anticipation!!!

I loved it!!!!

This read was an all nighter I couldn't put it down.

I loved the storyline, the characters, the banter, the chemistry was off the charts!!! There was so much angst and anticipation in this book I found myself holding my breath just waiting for it to happen. The growth between Tahoe and Regina was beautifully written!!

It was an emotional read, I found myself wanting to reach through the pages to hug both Tahoe and Regina. The inner demons are felt throughout the story, I felt myself tearing up several times because I could feel the pain the characters held within.

My only issue is that I wish we could have gotten some of Tahoe's POV *sigh* I would loved to have been in his head. LOL!!

This is a must read!! Can be read as a standalone.

I loved how they were just pretty much friends but the sexual tension was so clearly there yet neither one wanted to ruin the friendship that they had. They had such sexual, torturous angst that I kept thinking, just kiss each other already! If I had to change one thing about the book I would of liked them to hook up sooner! But then again that is one of the things that I loved about them. It reminded me VERY much of Remy and Brooks relationship, which is one of my ABSOLUTE favorites! I so hope we get more in the Manwhore series. Ms Katy Evans books are always a one click buy for me. I adore each and every book of hers. Have read them over and over again and again. I would highly recommend this book!

A Lovely. Tender and Heartbreakingly Sweet Romance

Have you ever read a story that very slowly, achingly slowly, builds the tension and heat between the two characters who are obviously meant to be together? For readers who have been reading the Manwhore series, Tahoe is Saint's best friend and Regina is Rachel's best friend and former roommate. Tahoe is another Manwhore who goes through women like water. He is always thirsty but the women never quench his thirst no matter how often he drinks from the well. Regina was terribly hurt by her only serious boyfriend and is attracted to Tahoe from the beginning. Tahoe tells Regina that he will never have a serious relationship so they settle for being best friends. This story touched me on so many levels. My daughter died from Leukemia as did Tahoe's wife Lisa. My daughter's boyfriend of many years played lacrosse. So of course this story had special meaning to me. Katy Evans is one of my most favorite authors and she doesn't disappoint with Ladies Man. Katy helps you feel what the characters are feeling and crave what the characters are craving. You have to read this book to experience the tender love and hot passion that finally brings Tahoe and Regina together. Five plus stars for one of the best stories I have ever read.

A selection for anyone who wants to learn about jetmodels.

I had always been in the dark when it came to jet engines, and with one of my phD siblyings only telling me little of what I really wanted to know, I asked a some modelers what book they would recomend to get started. Each pointed to Kurt Schreckling's book and now I point to it as well. He gives a basic introduction into thermaldynamics and other information that is needed to understand the "why's" of the book, but always keeping in mind teh truth that most people who read it are not enginers or physics majors. The book also gives explainations of the asembly prossess the tools one would need, the parts, and in the back of the book: the plans. The book cold almost be called "The Jetmodelers Cook Book"

Good little book

Overall this is a good book on the basic theory and construction of a model gas turbine and I would recommend it to others with a similar interest. The book looks a little thin, but it is packed with lots of good information in small print.

I could not give the book 4 stars because there are problems with the type setting of the equations. If you already have some mathematical and engineering experience, you can probably figure out what is intended. Otherwise some of the equations could be a little confusing.

It`s good book, with some explanations, but a little old(1994), it`s a excellent book for beguiners who don`t know nothing about model turbines.

Grade 4-7-In 1911, Hiram Bingham and a team of archaeologists went in search of Vilcapampa, the legendary lost city of the Inca. In this picture-book account of that expedition, Lewin relates Bingham's journey from Cusco to the jungles of Peru and from there, led by a local child, to mountaintop ruins. The site wasn't Vilcapampa, but rather an isolated, impenetrable ancient city of temples, dwellings, plazas, and terraces connected by steep staircases. Distinguished double-page watercolor paintings capture the grandeur of the location, the monumental solidity of the Inca stonework, and the surrounding jungle. The final pages continue the story with information on the work involved in preparing the ruins for excavation and some initial findings and include a useful pronunciation guide to Spanish and Quechua words. Follow this title with Elizabeth Mann's Machu Picchu (Mikaya, 2000) for background on the people who built this city, and to learn what later excavations yielded.

Gr. 2-4, younger for reading aloud. In 1911, a Yale professor in search of a lost Inca city was led to the site of Machu Picchu by local Indians. In this lavishly illustrated picture book, Lewin traces Professor Bingham's steps through the tangled mountain jungle to his exciting discovery. The language is graceful and uncomplicated, weaving in bits of background history along the way, and Lewin builds suspense at just the right pace: "They came to a grand stone staircase. Where could this lead? What else was here?" But it's the artwork that will really attract attention. Full-page watercolor spreads of the stunning vistas and thick forests contrast with dark, intimate views of Bingham inside homes and walking along walled city streets, searching for leads. A map of Peru and suggested further reading lists would have been welcome additions, but Lewin includes comprehensive notes that explain the excavation of Machu Picchu, as well as the primary sources he consulted. About the Author
Ted Lewin grew up in an old frame house in Buffalo, New York, with two brothers, one sister, two parents, a lion, an iguana, a chimpanzee, and an assortment of more conventional pets. The lion was given to his older brother, Don, while he was traveling as a professional wrestler, and he shipped it home. The family kept Sheba in the basement fruit cellar until Don returned and their mother convinced him to give it to the Buffalo zoo.

Ted always knew he wanted to be an illustrator. As a child he copied the work of illustrators and painters he admired, including N.C. Wyeth, Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, Velázquez, and Goya. When it came time to go to art school (Pratt), he needed to earn money to finance his education. So, following in his brother’s footsteps, he took a summer job as a wrestler—the beginning of a 15-year part-time career that eventually inspired his autobiographical book I Was a Teenage Professional Wrestler.

Ted’s career as an artist began with illustrations for adventure magazines, and it’s only over the last several years that he has devoted his time to writing and illustrating children’s books. “I’m having more fun doing this than anything I’ve ever done before,” he says. He is an avid traveler, and many of his books are inspired by trips to such places as the Amazon River, the Sahara Desert, Botswana, Egypt, Lapland, and India.

Ted and his wife Betsy live in Brooklyn, New York, where they share their home with two cats, Slick and Chopper.

Ted always knew he wanted to be an illustrator. As a child he copied the work of illustrators and painters he admired, including N.C. Wyeth, Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, Velázquez, and Goya. When it came time to go to art school (Pratt), he needed to earn money to finance his education. So, following in his brother’s footsteps, he took a summer job as a wrestler—the beginning of a 15-year part-time career that eventually inspired his autobiographical book I Was a Teenage Professional Wrestler.

Ted’s career as an artist began with illustrations for adventure magazines, and it’s only over the last several years that he has devoted his time to writing and illustrating children’s books. “I’m having more fun doing this than anything I’ve ever done before,” he says. He is an avid traveler, and many of his books are inspired by trips to such places as the Amazon River, the Sahara Desert, Botswana, Egypt, Lapland, and India.

Ted and his wife Betsy live in Brooklyn, New York, where they share their home with two cats, Slick and Chopper.

Magnificent Artwork Introduces Incredible Tale of Discovery

Dominated by beautiful artwork, this picture book traces Hiram Bingham's trek from Cuzco to his discovery of Machu Picchu - the so-called Lost City of the Incas. A few of the key characters involved in this specific segment of Bingham's 1911 are interspersed into the short book, but the boy whose family was living and farming on Machu Picchu and led Bingham to the ruins, creates a dreamlike quality to the tale. Lewins' watercolors fill the entire pages and explode with color, shading, details and subtlety. The story is written in language appropriate for readers in grades 1-3, and works equally wonderfully when read by an adult.

Machu Picchu was named one of the NEW seven wonders of the world in 2007 and Bingham's "discovery" of Machu Picchu celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. My 7-year-old stared at the images in Lewin's book in awe, and could relate to the boy who leads Bingham to the incredible stonework ruins that straddle two magnificent peaks of the might Andes. This is a terrific introduction to a legendary story of a legendary people.

good prep for child's trip to Machu Picchu

My 5 year old was captivated by the story of the search for the lost city of the Incas. We read this book many times before our visit to Machu Picchu. She was thrilled to climb up the steep trail and come out on the hill overlooking the city to find the view "looks just like in my story!"

There's enough detail to make the story interesting for adults to read aloud. The inclusion of the little boy who helps Bingham locate the lost city makes the story even more enticing for young readers. My daughter remembered all the facts from the story and was so excited to see the real place and learn that it was a true story.

I very strongly recommend this book for young kids interested in Andean peoples or who will be visiting Machu Picchu.

School Yourself with a Master

When a book has a slim spine one could mistakenly assume that it does not thoroughly cover its subject, or one could ignorantly figure that the topic is not important enough to generate a heavy tome, and thus pass it by and miss out on a wealth of knowledge. So you won't make that mistake, I highly recommend Tractate on a School Mount by Haute �cole master Alexander Nevzorov, at just over 100 pages including exquisite full color photographs. It is a work of genius concentrated and focused on the single act of being astride a horse.

The juicy details of this work are in the directive to base our relationship with horses on the understanding of them as sentient, intelligent, biological creatures, not just as a spiritual talisman or slavish equipment. When we understand what the horse experiences physiologically under the constriction of the saddle, the leverage of the bit and weight of even the best rider, we should think twice or more about getting on horseback in the first place and ask why it is a piece of our relationship with them.

Nevzorov explains that if one is going to enjoy the privilege of riding a horse, it should be done in service to the horse with a "School seat" in full awareness and with deep knowledge of the equine body and behavior, not to mention injury and poor health, as induced by discomfort and pain that is typical and inevitable in all disciplines of equestrianism. Natural vs imprisonment

When you watch horses moving in a natural fashion, your heart stops for a moment to allow you to witness the beauty hidden within the moves. Nature created horses with their movements intact. I was always asking myself about the why horses do not make me feel the same when i see them inprisoned under a dressage rider, or a show-jumping master. Why is it that they feel restrained, why are their movements not so graceful - its the feeling, im sure a lot of people get when they compare natural vs sports movements. By reading this book i was able to understand the difference between natural and restrained movements. Furthermore, this book has given me the ground to undertand natural motion of a horse in a much deeper manner, and the ability to apply it to my everyday communication with horses in a way that would not be accepted by the sports boards.
Who this book is? It is for people who has moved from sports into doing more natural things with horses. For those who seek deeper understanding of the way a horse is built from within, with a purpose of further refining their relationship.

I would not recommend this book to those who are stuck in a world of competitions or preparations for them as well as those who have no other options but to do as they are told, without the ability to allow their feelings towards horses go outside their mind because reading this book would make it even more difficult for them to continue doing what they are doing.

I've been an avid romance novel reader for many years and I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed the change so much

This was my first fantasy romance to read. I've been an avid romance novel reader for many years and I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed the change so much. The author drew me in to the characters early on and kept me intrigued throughout the book. I was able to visualize the fantasy location created and believe that it actually existed. The love story was sweet and frustrating, as any good romance can be, as Ivy finds love, but fights it and Dredd can't figure out how to express it without pushing Ivy away. I look forward to more books by this author and more branching out into the world of fantasy romance!

Ivy Black is a kitchen slave for the ShadowBorn nobles. Dredd is a scarred and shunned warrior of the feared Ajax tribe. The Ajax area tribe of huge people with fangs who are very fierce. When the ShadowBorn decide to sacrifice a maiden it's Ivy's name drawn from the basket. So she finds herself tied to a tree in the Dark Woods waiting for what she has no idea. Dredd is hunting in the Dark Woods and smells her and realizes she's a Vessel, someone who might be able to get him back into the good graces of his tribe. He rescues her from another warrior and bites her to mark her and keep her safe from the other Ajax. Ivy doesn't want to be a slave and sure doesn't want to be mated to an Ajax so one night she drugs him and escapes. She ends up at hiding from Dredd at a brothel where she's the maid. During Dredd's hunt for Ivy he joins the Beast of Sport, sort of a traveling gladiator show, where he's the undefeated champion. When he finds Ivy he takes her in more ways than one. Now Ivy has to decide if she wants to be his mate and stay with him or run back to the brothel. Is there a HEA is their future or are they doomed? I enjoyed this book and thought the characters were well written and the storyline flowed well. Who doesn't like a book about a maiden and an strong alpha male who swoops in and takes what he wants. Loved This Page Turner!

The book was exciting and well thought out. Liked the characters and could relate to the relationship issues. Plot developed in a real life way so you knew why these characters acted as they did. I hope there are many more books by Ms. Arcangelo to follow. I am not always pleased when I buy a book but this one was worth every penny.
