About the Author

Murray Weidenbaum is Edward Mallinckrodt Distinguished University Professor of Economics at Washington University in St. Louis and honorary chairman of the Weidenbaum Center on the Economy, Government and Public Policy. He was the first chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers to Ronald Reagan and also served as a member of Reagan’s Economic Policy Advisory Board. He is the author of numerous books, including Business and Government in the Global Marketplace, One-Armed Economist, and The Bamboo Network.

A classic. I'd misplaced my copy and was glad to find this one but the introduction is not nearly up to the level of the original analysis.

Dated Classic

"The Modern Corporation and Private Property" was hailed as an instant classic when it appeared in 1932. To my knowledge, it was the first book to spell out how modern corporate capitalism is characterized by pervasive oligopoly and the separation of management from ownership. These points are still valid today, and remind us that modern capitalism has little in common with the social system analyzed by Adam Smith and other Classical economists. However, most of "The Modern Corporation and Private Property" is taken up with an out-of-date, pre-SEC review of corporate finance law as it existed in 1930. As a result, the book will be of little interest to most modern readers, even though it is a "must" purchase for any serious library of books on economics or corporate governance.

Worthy of study today, as well as when it was written!

I was lucky to have Professor Berle as a teacher at the Columbia Law School. I read the book then (in the early 1960s) and re-read it recently. It is timely reminder that the corporation--that great engine of our prosperity--has undergone significant (and not for the better) changes--not only from when the book was written, but also in the forty-four years since I read it last.

This book is about cultural models. Cultural models are defined as molar organizations of knowledge. A proposal is then advanced to consider cultural models as fundamental units of analysis for an approach to culture that goes beyond the dichotomy between the individual (culture only in mind) and the collective (culture only in the social realm). The genesis of the concept of cultural model is traced from Kant to contemporary scholars. The concept underwent a number of transformations (including label) while it crossed and received further and unique elaborations within disciplines like philosophy, psychology, anthropology, sociology, artificial intelligence, and cognitive science. A methodological trajectory is outlined that blends qualitative and quantitative techniques that cross-feed each other in the gargantuan effort to discover cultural models. A survey follows of the extensive research about cultural models carried out with populations of North Americans, Europeans, Latino- and Native-Americans , Asians (including South Asians and South-East Asians), Pacific Islanders, and Africans. The results of the survey generated the opportunity to propose an empirically motivated typology of cultural models rooted in the primary difference between foundational and molar types. The book closes with a suggestion of a number of avenues that the authors recognize the research on cultural models could be traversing in the near future.

It wasn't the worst time management book I've read and some of the information was very relevant. But it wasn't simple or easy to follow along and keep all the tips and ideas in mind. The author made it more complicated than it needed to be. I would not recommend this book.

Really disappointed in this boring rehash of other people's points without being fresh and adding anything to them. I love Steve Covey, Shawn Achor, Spencer Johnson and many others who often say the same universal principle but in an original and fresh way.

Chicken Soup for the Travellers Soul is a winner

This is a wonderful addition to the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. One of my favorite stories is A Visit With My Parents. It is about a Peace Corps Volunteer living in the Philippines. The parents of the young woman seemed to have a greater appreciation of life. They also gained a broader perspective as well simply after experiencing how hard a Flipino family worked doing daily manual labor. They also experienced how this family lived with no electricity, plumbing, or beds which was an eye opener for them.
I was also touched by the story Road to Reconcilliation. This is a touching story about a man who lost his leg in the Vietnam War. This man had such bitterness toward his loss until he met a Vietnamese man in a sporting event for veterans. Tran Van Son lost not only his leg but also and his entire family. These two men become fast friends and eventually run the New York Marathon together.
I was touched by the story The Nicholas Effect. This is the story about a young boy who dies in a car accident. The majority of his organs were donated giving life to numerous people. I loved the story Earning My Wings. It is about a compassionate flight attendant who assists a young woman with a baby with clothes and food during a flight. Another story that sticks out in my mind is A Fair Price. This is a wonderful story about how an American college student working in Kenya building classrooms encourages an African man to tell his wife that he loves her for the first time.
Every story in this book is so touching and inspiring. I learned a lot about different places by reading. Chicken Soup for the Traveller's Soul is a winner.

Chicken Soup for the Traveler's Soul

This particular book in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series is one of the better ones in my opinion. But maybe that's the wanderlust in me speaking. All I know is, I enjoyed a good portion of the stories in this book for the Traveler's Soul.

The Chicken Soup for the Soul series is known for short, inspiring stories. This one is no different, although it mostly goes over travel. But not travel in the usual sense of the word. We have a trip to the moon included in this book in addition to trips out of country. I especially liked the stories about the Peace Corps, and there were a couple in this book. I was glad to see they included that as part of their travel stories. But there were a few stories I didn't enjoy. It seemed a big portion of these were about small trips made by dying people or as part of a wish program for dying children. Yes, it is technically travel, but do they have to include stories that will make you cry in every one of these books? Just a light-hearted one in full once in awhile would be nice.

Because this involves travel, it talks about meeting people all over the world and what can be shared even if you don't speak the same language. There were stories where the people spent hours together even though they didn't understand each other. They didn't have to, because the feelings were there. And that's a beautiful thing. It seems that every traveling soul shares a common theme of wanting to meet different people. Because that's part of the whole traveling experience. And these stories showed that.

The short story format is a good one. You can read a story a night or sit down with the book for one read straight through. The enjoyment doesn't lessen either way. I do feel that this is one of their shorter collections though, which surprised me, because with the whole world as a topic, you wouldn't think there'd be a lack of stories. And surprisingly, this one had quite a few stories based on religion. Now I realize this is a Christian publication, but with the world having some many religions, I was surprised that these were so dominant in the book.

As said before though, I think this is one of the better Chicken Soup books. It inspires a love of travel and a want to see new things.

After reading this book, you may actually enjoy travel. If you are one of those people that don't really appreciate traveling, this book give you some insight into the world of travel that you yourself may have overlooked.

Did someone say male virgin?

This is my second book by RN. I just adored the first book in this series so I just couldn't wait to read the next book. If you've read book 1 the characters will be all too familiar for you in this next installment. I love the way the author interjects humor into her work and it is somewhat reminiscent of Ruth Hartman's work. The main difference being that Ruth Hartman writes clean books and I assure you that in this series so far that is not the case. I do no mean to imply that you find it on every page, indeed that is not the case. The author takes the time to establish a bond between her characters and it is not just mere infatuation or lust but a natural occurrence between two people who care and yearn for the other.

I'm giving this book a 3 and 1/2 star rating as I did love the pair together I think the reviewer who labeled her review Bashful Duke...was a bit of an understatement. While the Duke of Ashbourne (Camden) did go after his lady Helena Walter was the man in that relationship. Yes Camden was adorable and had strong character. He was weak and had a low self esteem. I like my duke's, earl's men in general to have a moment where they shine. That moment where they show that they are in deed a MAN. Camden delivered when it came to pleasing Helena on the desk, in the bedroom (wherever the couple chose) but I would have liked to see a bit more confidence.

Even with that being the case I cannot deny that the book was a good read for me. The author did a good job explaining why Camden thought so little of himself and why it was not a "pressure" to talk to people. LOL. That is a play on words the author used in her story the word is substituted for pleasure. It is still a cute read and the humor and integrity of her characters were most enjoyable.

A light romance

This is a cute book by Ruth Ann Nordin. I have read quite a few of her books, and she often writes about somewhat childish men (I can't actually think of a hero of hers that isn't childish in some way), which in many ways separates her from other romance novelists who prefer to write about worldly and macho heroes, and in this way I think her books are often a nice change of pace. In this book, though, Ms. Nordin's character is naive and innocent and sweet, and very endearing. I wish there had been a bit more passion between the main characters before the marriage, and that part seemed harder for me to believe, but overall, this is a sweet and hopeful story about a man who can't attract women the usual way, and I enjoyed it.

Great Leaps is a Great Read

This is such a joy of a book, written with deep humility and earnest curiosity. Flahive exudes great compassion and humor in this breezy and enjoyable memoir which puts a human face on the story of modern China and its people's growing pains and pleasures. As an intrepid expat who set up a highly unusual coffeehouse there, Flahive is able to provide an absolutely fascinating perspective, and one which is at the same time uniquely intimate.

I loved reading about this American's travels and adventures. This is a side of China you probably won't ever see, because Colin and his friends go deep into the heart of China. It's face-paced and absorbing. Enjoy!

I got absorbed by the book since the first chapter, and finished it in just a few days. It includes very interesting and accurate stories about life(style) in rural China and about young girls and boys from the countryside moving to the cities, anecdotes about the opening and managing of Salvador’s Coffee House - a second home for most of the foreigners living in Kunming - by Colin Flahive himself together with his partners, the stories of great projects started by Colin and that are still carried on… all this mixed with various personal experiences (some pretty scary!!!), and everything enriched with personal views, feelings and thoughts. It’s an interesting and instructive overlook of the China that is not usually represented, plus it’s an adventurous journey in the life of a young guy in China. It’s really really worth it! Sara
